Probably work.  Just be careful with those larger bulbs.  I wrap the mini lights on the palm and wrap directly over with frost cloth which you can't do safely with C7 or C9 bulbs.  In Zone 5 I would think you need a foamboard enclosure?

It does work I've been thru some trial and errors I did burn a minor to death...wasn't using a cubeSecond attempt killed a trachycarpus things got way to hot in there. Hence the ventilation on top.

I too bought lots of mini lights, will be trying your method of lights then wrap. I do have a box it's for the needle and minor.  20221226_103012.thumb.jpg.e513dd33c3a21cc8c6918d277a9378be.jpg20221226_103045.thumb.jpg.1ed57ddac882d36c849176e9f016c4a6.jpg

I'll take pictures of the trachycarpus in front of the garden center in Montreal, it's been there for a while. Nothing too exotic just your windmills and tons of needles. I did spot a few Louisiana but they were in bad shape.

Here is a battered pindo Such a shame.....20210919_112202.thumb.jpg.0ca770e7a984d0d24d0085f9a641a4aa.jpg20210919_112153.thumb.jpg.fb3da81815fa8c7104342c64a7527ab1.jpg

Hi Alex,

I hope that works for you. I am in zone 5a Ottawa and I would be scared to try that here. Our frost line is about four feet so my worry would be that the roots would freeze and kill the palm. Do you not have to worry about that? Here is a picture of my Trachy protection. The box is for climate . . . The chairs are protection from my dog who likes to chew on the box😳. You can see one of my washies in the background. Sorry - pic is obviously upside down

Seems to work, I've been tweaking out this wrapping for the last 4 winter. First 2 attempt have failed badly. Lost 1 sabal minor and 2nd attempt a trachy....

The roots are covered with 12 inches of mulch plus I'll say 10 inches wide. When wrapping I make sure to enclose all the mulch. Then I just throw a few cinder blocks to weight it down. Whenever it snow I like to plow as much snow as possible to insulate it.

I must admit that you're boxes sure are good looking, here is mine for minor and needle palm, because it's just impossible to tie up a needle.
