Germination progress

After a trip to Cali and a visit to Patrick I was in possession of quite a few seeds of jubaea, Chamaedorea Radicalis trunking form, and mixed trachycarpus Nanus hybrids (open pollinated at Patrick’s property). Jubaea seeds were collected from Mission bay. I’ve sewn about 180 Cham rad, 150 nanus hybrid and 200 jubaea. Have had the first pops on all three in less than 2 months. Set up in tank shed room at 70f ambient, heat mat on 18/6 on/off. This mainly just to keep track of the progress and collect any advice along the way.  Thanks for lookin!
(p.s still have some jubaea seeds available.)

The jubaea is so impressive and hard to germinate

Winter low: 16F (December 2022), Summer/spring high: ~85F (March 2023). Very humid climate.

More and more sprouting. Cham Radicalis about to touch the lid not sure how that will work soon. One jubaea sprout browned and fell off, but more coming out. Nanus hybrids popping up here and there. Added light a week or so ago and things getting green. Looking forward to this spring summer!

The Room is 70f, I have them on heat mats with timer set to 18/6 on/off. Heat Mats claim to raise temp of seed trays 10-20f above ambient. Also Light on same 18/6 schedule. So long story short… 80-90f for 18hrs daytime lights on, 70f 6 hrs night lights and heat mats off.  It seems to be working well. Found more sprouts today but I’ll try to post pics maybe weekly. I need to find a tall cover for the Radicalis tray they’re about to touch the lid in the next few days.

At what point should I pot the sprouting seeds? some sprouts are getting to be a couple inches downward root and green sprout pointing up. A few are starting to actually lift the seeds out of the perlite. Can I just pluck those ones gently and pot them up in their own tall tree starter pot? I know jubaea don’t like humidity too much but at what point should I remove from the tray covered by humidity dome and move to open air and moist medium? Wanted to also avoid any root entanglement for when separated the trays they’re in are pretty shallow I would have gone deeper medium if done again, anyways thanks for any input.
(I’ll update pics soon)

NWpalms, When you pot them up it helps to keep some bottom heat or a nice warm south facing window.  I have potted them early but I think an inch or two of root is better. I have waited quite a while on these (photo below) late germinating seeds, about eleven months now. Other Jubaea seeds started at the same time have two leaves already but they germinated eight months ago. When they start pushing the seed out of the perlite you can pot them IMO. I think they stall a bit when you pot them so keeping them warm helps, especially this time of year.
Good to see your problem with white spots or potential mold issues resolved themselves.

Things moving along nicely! Gonna let the jubaea go a little longer before starting to pot them up individually. C. Radicalis may need potting first I had to get a tall dome they ran out of room and we’re pressed against the lid.

NWpalms@206.  Have you started potting your Jubaea yet?  I just moved the fifty I have potted up from last year from the greenhouse out into the full sun. Planted one out this week ( four years old ) that was ready. Three in the ground.  We are still getting morning frosts but the young plants seem fine with it although I throw a tarp on them at night .
My plan is to plant the Jubaea like sentries.  I call them “ legacy trees”.  I have lots of room so even though I will never see any of them seed I would like to plant out several dozen over the next few years here on the farm.

I found these to be extremely unfussy, so there is probably no need for covers to increase humidity. Mine sprouted up quite happily in normal indoor conditions and I don't think they have so much as a brown tip between them. They've been next to a cold window all winter and are still pushing up their second leaves.

Those are Looking good! Have a pic of the smaller ones in pots?  Yes, I have began potting them, going to do some more this afternoon and  should be at about 35 potted by end of day. More will be ready each week and sowing another 100. Absolutely legacy palms! I plan to plant many at my place and hope to have the PNW jubaea Mecca before I meet my maker.

Ya they’re pretty easy going, I did have a couple dry up when I went too long without misting but they were just poking through. I’m about to plant maybe 2 dozen that are outgrowing the trays already. Mass planting these in a couple years.

Update pics. Beginning to pot up jubaea and need to start the Radicalis they’re getting big! A couple nanus hybrids starting their second strap. Exciting to see progress.

NWpalms@206, Here are some of the Jubaea that are less than a year old. There are two Brahea Armata center left. I have started a new season of germinating Jubaea and I am trying some Parajubaea Cocoides and Parajubaea Torallyi seeds.
You have me interested in Parlor Palms now. Lots of seed at the sunken gardens Santa Barbara.

Looking good, those seem to be moving along for under a year. Getting mine potted up, 28 per tote in 4”x10” tree pots. Slow and steady. Excited for warmer longer days ahead.

Anyone growing dates seeds? They grow extremely fast, we got a sprout within a month, 3 fronds in about two months.

I'm trying to germinate some dactyliferas right now from fruit bought at the store.

I may have been lucky to get it germinate in a month after multiple tries. But I was able to get one sprouting and was able to get one frond starting. They do need a good amount of water and about half to three quarters of a month to germinate. But after they grow fast and nice.
