Roystoneas in the failing light of afternoon

DoomsDave

Recommended Posts

It rained! For a couple days! Hooooray! For once I had the foresight (forgot?) to run the water and Mother Nature dropped about 2 1/2 to 3 inches (6.75 - 7.25 cm) so I could save it for later.

But, it stopped and my biggest Roystoneas command attention from every angle. Such a scary lovely afternoon. Show us yours! Any palm you love, anywhere in the world!

IMG_3039.thumb.JPG.c80cadcbf987a7a89c7ae193d098fb7a.JPGThis is a Venezuela Royal as far as I know. It has been in the ground for 22 years here in Santa Paula , California. We have temps that can reach 40 degrees ( south facing) or sometimes colder. I bought it as a seedling from Jungle Music Phil down in Encinitas and was told it would not grow where I live. It seems healthy , not as robust as the Cuban Royal but fits the garden well . Harry

All my royals have only 1-2 fronds each after Ian so they are a bit camera shy.

Take some pictures anyway, then show their recovery later on.

I like royals, but they’re far the only ones that look fetching in the late afternoon light.

Here is my royal which is still just a baby and a couple other pics from this evening. Bismarckia don’t not like hurricanes and tropical storms much…

Beautiful Palms Ruskin! Is the third palm down in the first thread a Majesty? That is one stout beauty. Thank you.

Yes. It is a cheapo $5 big box store special majesty palm grown from 1 gallon size 😁. Easily one of my favorite palms in my yard. Self cleaning, robust, nice looking and apparently can take hurricanes and moderate freezes. A real winner if you keep them watered and fertilized. But to be honest, it gets nothing more than what the natural rain, sprinklers and lawn care companies put down on both sides of the fence as far as fertilizers and other sundry chemicals.

No royals here but someone mentioned Majesties and I brought mine inside tonight as we're looking at a low temp of 38 in the morning. Aaaaaaàand Sancho photobombing. IMG_20221111_223724.thumb.jpg.7a3bd722a914ae189f5178101c4df9d3.jpg

Let's just say that during construction I had to deal with a slope that decided to slide down towards the house. And unlike California, water management is a real thing here!

All palms are special. Palms growing in habitat are extra special to me. Here we have some natives in Fakahatchee Strand on January 1, 2021 at 4:51 pm.

Please note that not all Royals grow as single palms of uniform size in evenly spaced rows 😉

Consulted Palmpedia Encyclopedia and I believe you are absolutely correct. A picture of one at the San Diego zoo looks remarkably similar. It is possibly the skinniest palm I have ever seen. Thank you Dave-O!

You're welcome Bubba-O! I have one in my yard, that's basically a long broomhandle with leaves, which sets seed every year.

It’s not a Roystonea but it’s pretty striking anyway, a young bismarckia.
