Dwarf Butias

Recommended Posts

Trying to find seed, seedlings, or shippable sizes of any of the dwarf Butia species.  lallemantii, mattogrossensis, arenicola, microspadix - those are the ones I know of, but it seems like there are so many species on the outskirts that are virtually unheard of.

Any ideas?

I see Rare Palm Seeds has some Butia lallemantii seeds in their "New" section. They sure ain't cheap though!

@ShadyDan thanks, but I ordered from them earlier this year.  I got an empty package with a letter from customs.  I didn't do the phyto cert, but someone posted on here shortly after that they submitted the phytosanitary cert with their order, and their shipment still got seized by customs.  I'm done buying internationally for now.  Maybe things will change in the future.

Last year Patrick had a Butia "Silva Minor", (very small 2/3ft mature) not a hybrid, maybe B arenicola.  From the best I can tell, B arenicola may be the same as B mattogrossensis.  However, lallemantii is high on my list.  A suckering Butia?  Yes please!

I asked Patrick if he has an updated list for this year, as I'm wanting to order again.  He said check back next week. I'm hoping he still has the "minor".  Or the Butia x Butia "alegretensis" which is a naturally occuring hybrid of Butia lallemantii and Syagrus.

Ah that stinks, yea the US customs are getting pretty strict. I tried to sneak some seeds down from here to Texas a while back and they got seized. We don’t even need a phyto for small orders of non invasive seeds shipped internationally to Canada. I guess we are pretty spoiled.

Definitely keep us posted on Patrick’s list if he shares a new one.

Earlier this year I also ordered some hybrid waggy x fortunei seedlings from Joe Clemente and they got seized.  Then he tried to send hybrid seeds and they got snagged.  But, he labelled the packages with the words "seedlings" and "seeds".

However, the seeds I got from Garry Tsen from coldplant out of China got through both times, around the same time period as the RPS and Banana Joe incidents.  The package however was labelled "dry beans" instead of seeds.  I guess the customs folks don't know that a bean is a seed.  I was thinking if I ever tried to ship seeds internationally, I'd label the package, "decorative beads" or "jewelry supplies".  Hey, it's not up to me what you choose to do with my Organic Vegan Beads Sold Strictly for Macrame Purposes.

Yea I definitely labelled mine as beads when I sent them to Texas, they still got nabbed. I think its a little roulette whenever you try no matter how its labelled.

I travel to Washington and Oregon on occasion for work, I should start a seed smuggling side hustle. Maybe I shouldn't have typed that, the USDA probably has some moles snooping around the forums for people like me...

They certainly have people going around forums and Facebook groups.

Also, I accidentally ordered something on eBay that was international and an agent showed up a few weeks later. She was holding a folder of paper that held all my correspondences with various plant sellers (to try to show I wasn't naive about buying plants) and said I would get a big fine if I couldn't produce the cutting and destroy it (the cutting was not viable and I had long thrown it away. I didn't get fined) . It was an actual accident, but it was sobering to see her carrying all my eBay and Etsy history.
