Separating washy seedlings

5am

Recommended Posts

How much care must be taken to separate Washingtonia seedlings from a community pot?  I’ve collected some 50+ seeds and will have plenty of room for 50+ trees but present circumstances may not allow for 50+ nursery pots. If I put 10 germinating seeds to a 5gal pot and decide to separate them during the strap leaf stage by hosing the dirt from the roots are they likely to survive? Is there a better method?

Pics of some parents, just for good measure.

You should have little trouble separating Washy seedlings by that method. Just be patient and careful when separating the roots. But I would plant no more than 5 seedlings in a 5g pot. In current summer heat they will grow like gangbusters and fill the pot with roots in no time. Washies are fast and aggressive growers so have enough pots on hand because you may need them sooner than you think
