Yes they do but the protection isn’t that extensive and I’ve also seen sabals protected in the same way that died. These are what the best Washingtonia survivors look like in the north of austin which was only 1 or 2 degrees warmer during 2021 freeze

This Washy survived near 0° couple of years ago in Garland, Tx!

It now looks about as happy after Xmas freeze as my backyard Trachy! Note the smaller Sabal bermudana burned and taller one with blankets as well. 

My Brahea armata I just planted last spring has intact center spears look normal color deep down!

Raining heavy today but going to apply hydrogen peroxide bud rinse on all of them. Just to be safe.

The palms are prob pushing green like mine even after the recent cold. A week of 80° weather will see to that! 

That one house has great palms but those poor arborvitae by front door! 😳 Yikes

You guys might want to travel to certain parts of Chicago, you can find yuccas without protection and possibly a small sabal, mostly yuccas

No offense but there are more yuccas and small sabals in one city block in DFW than there are in within a 50 mile radius of the Chicago metroplex, not to mention here there are mature Washingtonia and sabals mixed in so I’m not sure that is going to entice anyone to visit the midwest

As a lifelong resident of Chicago that moved to Texas a few years ago.. you may want to look into a new hobby, lol... just being totally honest.  You're not going to have much luck with anything on this board.

Oh no need for a new hobby. The windmill palm I’m growing out here in Chicago is not dead and thriving with some decent protection during the winter, especially the during the cold months January and February. The temps have also gone up over the years, we haven’t hit -30 ever for over a couple years now. Either way the protection will heat up the palm to keep it warm enough during days in the negatives.

I don't even know what to say to this other than, good luck but you're on a Dallas thread.. maybe start something showing the wildly palm growth of Chicago?  The fact you're thrilled about not seeing -30F says it all.  Good luck protecting your palms when they actually grow lol... which, long-term they won't.

You’d be better off just renting palms from those companies that rent out to the places on the beach downtown, at least then you could have a legit palm that looks good for a few months and then you don’t have to build a structure each season just to protect a Trachy or Sabal that’s gonna look half dead in spring and decline in long term.

I don't want to get into an argument here, but it's definitely possible to grow palms here, and my palm doesn't even look half dead when uncovering for spring, since this year we are having an early spring because of the minor cold weather.  If you only got one life, might as well try to grow a palm here in Chicago.

Sort of, but it's just that years ago usually in January or February a couple years back, we would have temperatures like Alaska for a couple days, right after that the temperature would go back to normal. But honestly, I will grow palms here in Chicago and I only got one life to live.

Jubea chilensis after 11F in Dallas December 2022. Tree  was defoliated and and wrapped with a tarp. Brahea mooreii regrowing. Loquats beginning to lead out. I damaged Brazoria palm in background.

Also the hooters washingtonia Hybrids downtown are pushing green, one of them has pushed out 3 0r 4 deformed fronds and is about to move on to the normal ones. Will try to get a pic

You know, when I was a kid here in Big D, it was the original remaining Washies from the 30's Centennial Fairgrounds that sparked my insane luv for the palms!

Being raised on old De Mille movies with Egyptian-type sets; The 10 Commandments movie played every Spring right before Summer vacation; Gilligan's Island; The Tiki Craze

So many TV shows being filmed in Cali with palms sticking up way high in the air. Even The Flintstones had palm references! LOL We became enamoured with all

trees palms! That's my story and I'm musing out loud here. 

Anyway, then the brutal winter of 1984 came and two weeks below freezing wiped out almost every palm (even Sabals sp). I had myself, as a young teen, planted a Trachy that croaked 

along with a pretty big Washy my mom bought for me as a birthday gift in that era. Dead. All these years affiliated with IPS, working in the nursery industry professionally and travelling

the world to see palm habitats! And it was so nice to see the increased commercial and residential use of palms to the point that they were pretty commonplace since that awful winter 

(and the equally brutal '89-90 freezes), but it soured my enthusiasm over the years to plant Washies, and i never planted one again after losing them a couple more instances. And now it's

devastating to see so many dead Washy  stumps around town after the last several winters. The removal of them being a formidable task many are left in place as so much totem poles.

Just too bloody cold this far north for them obviously. But I am glad many did and do still plant, I just think Fair Park would do better to plant Sabals. Texana or palmetto for those

wonderful bldgs. After all, wasn't the first recorded palm in the new world discovered down on the Rio Grande in Texas a Sabal texana?! More appropriate than "the daughter of the West

My queen, pindo, and date palm all made it in Dallas this year (queen and date with protection of course). Even with protection the Dec freeze was rough on the queen. Recovering quickly now that it has warmed up though!
