Beautiful, compact palm, that is extremely rare, even in it's native Cuba. As it turns out, these things also have proven themselves to be trouble free growers in the Arizona desert; withstanding our extremes of both heat and cold. I'm starting a new batch now,and just wanted to share how tiny and delicate they are as seedlings. Notice how big the root on the turned pot already is, just as the 1mm sprout breaks the soil surface. They appear to be nearly identical in growth to a batch of Coccothrinax boschiana I collected and sprouted from a trip to the Dominican Republic in 2020. Both species sprout heavily, exactly 1 month from sowing, with 90F bottom heat.

Love those He’s!! Particularly in a group like the Montgomery Botanical. They look like a large herd of unknowns checking out the terrain. Aztropic will have a large force soon growing in the unsuspected Phoenix area!

Potted up some of the newly germinated hemi seedlings into 1 gallon pots today. Identical in every respect growing from seed to the Coccothrinax boschiana I started 2 years ago. Both start out life as tiny blades of grass... Hemi's in front - 2 year old boschianas in the rear to compare.

Noticed an interesting growth trait in this field of Hemi's... Every single plants growth point is bent over, and it's not from hitting any ceiling. :bemused:

That is peculiar.   Hopefully not a bad sign, but something they will grow out of.

Here are some indirect shots of my smaller one. Pretty much always has a tortoise under the skirt too.

Here is the big one in the front yard. That is so neat that this palm can grow in Arizona!

For starting out so tiny, these are actually growing like weeds! Most are about a single 8" blade of grass already.

Starting another batch of hemi's! 😄

First sprouts are soo tiny - just 1/32 of an inch. Makes you wonder how any of them manage to survive in the wild.

Second pic is of last year's sprouts - only on their second blade of grass strap leaves now.
