Naturalized palms

Palms and Pines

Recommended Posts

Hello everybody my first post on the forum. I have seen previously a few old posts about naturalized palms but I wanted to start a new one. this is what I have seen naturalize around me 5DC42624-AE91-4A86-8DDB-82954FA157F6.thumb.jpeg.5f48ea791bfbe4736b6ac31676f3bbc2.jpeg

another one I find this one more likely to have self seeded considering it’s in the middle of the sea grapes.89498A96-1593-4AAC-B0B9-CD28007DEAE1.thumb.jpeg.7a81075c69d0411b1369f084e0e8025a.jpeg

chamaedorea elegans

and that is all the ones I have pictures of.

All common species, that from what I have seen aren’t really invasive (Class 1 invasive anyway) as they aren’t really taking over (with the possible exception of phoniex reclinata).

Im trying to think if I have seen anymore unique species out in the wild, I believe I saw a Bismarck somewhere but I don’t have any photos.

Here is a tall Washingtonia that likely self seeded, it’s actually growing pretty much right in the canal, I always admire it when I go by the area.

The dypsis (well I guess not dypsis anymore but thats going to take some getting used to) at turkey creek in palm bay has grown quite a bit and actually looks quite nice. I hope it doesn't get destroyed. There was a queen growing in the same park that was obviously wacked by machinery and a nice fruiting papaya that was cut down, which I don't understand when the park has a sign showing and wilding citrus, and the park has a lot of invasive Carrotwood no one's seemed to notice. I think it should either be none or all either no picking favorites, and they all go or just let the few naturalized plants go without picking favorites.

This might be the hardest to spot yet a Washingtonia among saw palmetto in the middle of a longleaf pine scrub. 20230518_115658.thumb.jpg.7a8774c5915ad8b75115ec4542ceab93.jpg20230518_115653.thumb.jpg.f6214c0e24b851b0801ac13fd4010ee3.jpg20230518_115638.thumb.jpg.fb78aead52cb779181dcea128dfd72b5.jpg20230518_115648.thumb.jpg.30a048b94c12aca13eb643ef6869f122.jpg

C. lutescens can definitely be spread by rats and squirrels. They have planted plenty around my yard and beyond over the past few years.

There is a vacant 1/3 acre lot diagonal from me in Deltona that is filled with oaks, sand pine, and completely covered in wild grape (therefore making the interior extremely light filtered and probably humid).

The neighbor had disposed of her landscape clippings, unwanted plants, and the like in it for the last 25 years.

in fact, she has been known to somehow go in there and dig out plants she desires.

I have personally seen queens popping up through the jungle. I believe I’ve also seen a Washingtonia. The queens seem rather abundant, most likely as a result of the decades of discarding fruit in there.
