It could have fooled me.  It was like a tsunami of wind driven water on the northside of the house for hours.

Does anybody know what the maximum wind gust in Port Charlotte was?

102 mph is what ive found. Although, these stations likely stopped reporting before the worst of the storm arrived due to power failure.

For what this is worth, the Charlotte County Airport in Punta Gorda (KPGD) recorded a high wind speed of 124 MPH on Wunderground:

It was a very nasty storm. It nuked my parents house in south Venice and it was worse farther south for sure.  It destroyed many a roof in my neighborhood and knocked over lots and lots of oaks and magnolia trees. It was a long duration storm for a lot of us which allowed a lot of damage to happen even if maximum winds only hit around the low 100s…

And don’t forget that these things spawn tornadoes…

Yes! This is one of the impacts that doesnt get mentioned very much. Tornadoes with tropical systems typically occur in the front right quadrant, or the northeast side. This is one of the many threats associated with these storms. While the tornadoes produced by these are usually weak tornadoes, they can still cause lots of damage. Even if its an EF1 tornado, you can have damage similar to a high end Category 1 to low end Category 2 hurricane.

Other impacts include freshwater flooding, storm surge, and damaging winds. And also, lightning can happen at any point during the storm. Lightning hot spots in hurricanes are usually the outer bands, and sometimes the eyewall. Lightning in the eyewall is usually a sign of strengthening, but not always.
