Emarohl
Hey folks, recently planted a couple coconut trees in my yard and I’m wondering if anyone can assist me in identifying the cultivar. I was told one of them (the green one) is a maypan however I’m not 100% sure. It also kinda looks like a green malayan. The other one has yellow petioles so maybe a yellow Malayan? What other coconut palms have yellow fronds like that? I appreciate the help. thanks!
GottmitAlex
Do you know how old they were when planted? 5 year high 42.2C/108F (07/06/2018)--5 year low 4.6C/40.3F (1/19/2023)--Lowest recent/current winter: 4.6C/40.3F (1/19/2023)
Emarohl
I just planted them about a month ago. Not sure exactly how old but my guess is about 2-3 years old. I bought them from a neighbor whose yard they didn’t fit in.
kinzyjr
They do look like Green and Gold Malayan. That's typically what is carried in the box stores as well. To get other cultivars, you usually have to go to a nursery. 1 Lakeland, FL USDA Zone (2012): 9b | Sunset Zone: 26 | Record Low: 20F/-6.67C (1985, 1962) | Record Low USDA Zone: 9a | 30-Year Avg. Mr. Coconut Palm
Welcome to the Forum. They look kind of like Green and Golden Malayan Dwarfs. If you could take a close up pic, or two of the petioles of the yellow/golden ones, that would help in identifying them. John

John I was thinking golden and green Malayan as well but wasn’t sure about the golden one. Here are some pics I have saved, I can take some more when I’m home if needed. Hope this helps with the ID.

Strange, that one in the above pics looks like halfway between a Golden and Green Malayan, but Malayans are self pollinating, so hybrid crosses between them is not possible. If you could take some pics of it during daylight hours, probably with either morning sun, or afternoon sun shining on the petioles, that should help in identifying them. John Hopefully this help you a little more. To my eye, it’s yellow but I’m no palm expert.

Are all those pics from the same palm? Because it's hard to tell. The Golden Malayan Dwarfs usually have very golden yellowish/orange petioles, and the Yellow Malayans usually have very yellow petioles. The Green Malayans usually have very green petioles and cannot be mistaken for either of the other two forms of Malayans. John John
GottmitAlex
It seems there are two cocos in this thread. A green and a golden. 5 year high 42.2C/108F (07/06/2018)--5 year low 4.6C/40.3F (1/19/2023)--Lowest recent/current winter: 4.6C/40.3F (1/19/2023)
Emarohl
I’m fairly confident after your responses that the green coco is a green Malayan. but that yellow one I just posted most recently is a golden Malayan right?
