TonyDFW
People often ask, which is more cold hardy? W. Filifera or S. Mexicana. Last winter in Dallas we had a test for cold endurance. 3F with 10 consecutive days below freezing. I wouldn’t make a sweeping generalization, but more s. Mexicanas survived than did the washingtonianas. Large adult specimens of both species were wiped out. There were a few survivors of both species. In the following images you will see the one large palm specimen that survived ( with its foliage intact too) among a group of palms. An adult and nearby juvenile Sabal mexicana survived among 5 filifera. All grown on site from seedlings.
DreaminAboutPalms
I think if you were to compare Sabal Mexicana hardiness to Washingtonia Filifera hardiness when the Filifera was in the desert it could compete. Sabal Mexicana is best for Texas though
DreaminAboutPalms
Also we got lucky this past year; most of Texas was in a huge drought leading up to you know what otherwise I don’t think we’d be seeing as many Filifera recoveries
