Here’s something interesting I noticed. The bananas in photo 45 are not Musa basjoo. Musa basjoo have yellow flowers while the ones in the photo display the typical red banana flowers. That means that the bananas on that plant may actually form edible bananas.

#4 & 14 are unreal to me. Not just the palms but the setting also enhances the impression (as opposed to some of the other pictures where I feel the palms can barely breathe). Beautiful!

That Jubaea in Richmond must be decently old. Do you know if it's been growing there its whole life, or was it planted as a mature specimen? Considering that location appears to be right next to a nursery called 'The Palm Centre', I suspect the latter.

Good spot. I grow a few different types of bananas here myself, but I am no expert on the genus. Any idea what variety of Musa they could be specifically? I'm sure a few people on here would have some ideas as to what type they are exactly...?

That Jubaea in Richmond must be decently old. Do you know if it's been growing there its whole life, or was it planted as a mature specimen? Considering that location appears to be right next to a nursery called 'The Palm Centre', I suspect the latter.

That Jubaea has been there at least a decade now, so I would say it was planted anywhere from 10-15 years ago. It used to have a small crown and an obvious lack of vigour, which is common for big palm transplants during their first few years, however that Jubaea has clearly settled in fine now and is growing well. It is actually located within the grounds of the palm centre, who would have planted it there, along with the Butia Odorata and Butia Yatay that I posted. They have a few other interesting plantings on their grounds too.

The Palm Centre is the biggest London and southeast England palm retailer, although their stock is pretty limited, just like every other palm retailer in the UK. Beyond Trachycarpus, Chamaerops, CIDP and some enormous and very expensive Jubaea's, you won't find much else there, or anywhere in the UK. It's well worth a visit though just to see their prized palm specimens planted out there. That is the best Jubaea in London for sure, given that the big Packington Estate Jubaea is still settling in and won't have a full, flush crown for a few more years.

I have been to the Palm Centre a few times many years ago (probably not long after they moved to that location—early 2000s); can't remember seeing any Jubaeas then, but that wouldn't have been the primary focus of my attention. I do remember they used to have a lot of massive Trithrinax campestris, shipped over from the Argentine pampas (those were billed as hardy, so I wonder if you've come across any?), and a really pretty decent selection of tropical palm and cycad seedlings (several of which I bought, although, alas, none are still alive; my most prized was a Dioon caputoi). Also tree ferns such as tropical Cyatheas and other delights; it was like a botanic garden where everything was for sale! Their selection today (if the website is anything to go by) is incredibly paltry; I suppose there's not much money in interesting palms and other plants that need to be grown under glass when you have a London rent to pay for a comparatively large footprint. It's a pity, although I appreciate they have to make ends meet.

Great selection of photos.  The Washingtonia in number 9 is absolutely massive!  It's also encouraging for my much younger garden, in a similar climate - my Brahea, Washingtonia etc. probably have a good chance of looking like these in time.

I have an update on the Washingtonia in number 20, as I was there in November 2021:

@Ryland That Washie is a rocket as well, completely outgrowing and outcompeting the Trachycarpus next to it. They were both planted as tiny specimens too, but the Washie is clearly leaving it for dead now. It appears that Washingtonia Robusta/Filibusta will grow twice as quickly as Trachycarpus Fortunei in London.

Thanks again for locating this Washie last year and for also providing a photo update on it. Did you happen to get a photo update of the other Washie in Greenwich as well? The one that is located down a one-way street, up against a brick wall and partially hidden? Google street view is like 3-4 years old for that one.

I didn't get a photo of that one unfortunately @UK_Palms, it was only a very brief visit.

Yes they are certainly faster growers.  In my own garden the Washingtonia was planted smaller than the Trachycarpus, and despite the two largest Trachycarpus growing a foot or more last year the Washingtonia looks like it will overtake them.  It's very satisfying to see its trunk has really started forming, about 8" wide at the bottom now.

There is no doubt they are good pics of palms in London. Without wanting to sound discrediting though, and just simply commenting based on the repetition of it - how many more threads need to be opened which show pages of London palms many of which have been posted before?  I think most people get by now that cold hardy palms grow adeptly in London:)

This thread isn’t just palms though, it is London exotics in general, such as the citrus trees and the big Norfolk Island Pine that I posted at number 40. So there are quite few things that haven’t been posted before, not to mention the list has been updated as of 2022 now and is ordered/ranked, so people know what to prioritise. Like if someone is visiting London, especially from overseas, I want to ensure they have access to the locations and know exactly what palms to check out. There has never been a ‘top’ London exotics list like this to my knowledge and this one is very comprehensive. Lots of different species included and not just palms.
