7A Mule progress over years

Yea I will think about that offer.  I think it can go another winter if I cut the fronds short.   But it is on borrowed time.  I wonder if a pickup could haul it or it would need a trailer?  15+ feet with rootball I'd guess.

You're right... a pickup might not do the trick! By all means, nurse it though another winter if you can. It's a lovely specimen.

Unbelievably tropical looking.  Whatever you're doing, keep it up. The longer you keep yours the more hope it gives me for the 4 ft. Mule I planted at my parents place earlier this spring.

Thanks! Standard Butia x Syagrus.  I wasn't aware of all these fancy hybrids at the time.

3 feet but it's going to clear everything fine as it's leaning out which makes it look better.  Wanted to get as much microclimate in there as possible especially on the ground freeze on this one

@teddytn Not tearing out yet it will have to die by cold.  I can cover this winter I think by cutting fronds in half then the spear is about 12 feet to mummy type wrap with a pole in middle.

What will you do when it gets too tall?

List it on craigslist for 10k like the people selling palms for ridiculous prices. LOL.  Seriously I will wrap it the best I can until weather gets it.  Several winters lately have not been cold enough to kill it here.  Weather gamble.  It may can be wrapped to 20ft if I protect the trunk/spear.  Yet to be seen I don't want to build a box I only want to blanket or frost cloth it over heat.

2022 protection.  Forecast calls for 4F.   Cut all but 3 fronds and cut them in half to get into a 12' protection. mini lights on thermocube.  8' pole with mini lights around it running up spear area, covered in frost cloth then square heater cover. Bottom will get blanket during vortex.

This is god tier Allen, might as well grow a mule palm here in Chicago. But I’m going  to buy the mini lights, the type you have for next year winter protection, especially because of the incident with the larger lights

Give me a couple warm months and I'll post a update I'm sure.  It's really growing faster than anticipated.  From here on out it's either get super lucky and have lows 16-20F that don't damage it much or protect the trunk/spear.

Fan palms are probably definitely easier to protect, but a mule palm looks amazing for a pool or just a nice spot in the backyard.

I disagree, from my experience Its much easier to secure pinnate fronds together.  Tying together washingtonia fronds can be a nightmare.

True, but I don’t have robusta so I kinda forgot about that. But most fan palms except washingtonia species are easy to tie the fronds.
