All about Agaves

Thread for all things agave. Top of the list of all time favorite plants for sure. Full on ready for battle with the elements and other creatures. Such an iconic theme in artwork, advertising, movies. Always eye catching in the landscape. Most completely non plant lovers can ID an agave. Not to mention tequila and mezcal. Palms, cacti, and then without a doubt third would be agave for potted plants at least in my opinion.

Agave Americana may take the top spot. Incredible being in front a mature specimen. Not my pic.7E7978D4-8D51-4F03-AA6F-4E7CD54801EA.jpeg.d424ffb2c8586f4f57bc1329c98ee12a.jpeg

Americana are monsters for sure. I keep seeing videos on YouTube of people planting Americana’s in Canada….can’t see them making it long term there. Are there any big ones planted near you anywhere?

No.  A few blocks away, in a park is agave blue glow. Good size, protected by surrounding plants.

Read an article on an agave montana in the PNW. That thing was huge. No doubt you’ve got the weather to grow a bunch. Found it! https://www.google.com/amp/s/gardenriots.com/2019/11/15/agave-montana-montes-flowering-attempt-and-whats-behind-it/amp/

I try to stay away from agave americana for it's vicious spines and tendency to spread uncontrolled if left unattended.  I'm a huge fan of agave though! I'll try to get a few updated pics of mine. Here are ovatifolia, macroacantha & desmetianna

It's macroacantha. I love how compact and symetrical it is.

Plan is to plant out my back easement with agaves and Cycads . Plant around all the natural stone some of the rock are to big to Move . The colony’s are attenuata I have 4 huge colonies on the property . Also had a huge colony of americanas that I just had removed about 8 months ago. At first I really enjoyed them . But americanas really do get out of control . And when you have atleast 30 americanas the size of Volkswagens it’s a real project . They are gorgeous but desert pack rats loved them . Also after removing them the ground squirrel population is rampant now . Owls and hawks can’t keep up .

Yeah perspective is everything. If they were taking over my yard I might have a slightly different view of agaves. Totally different with an americana vs. any medium or small size agave too. People envy all the rain I get here until they see the amount of weeds I’ve got to deal with each year lol

@JubaeaMan138 those big ass timber’s are awesome by the way. I acquired a bunch this year for retaining walls, but none that big

Railroad ties . They were here when I moved in. Funny thing is they are probably 30 years old atleast most of them are almost completely hollow . I’m going to be changing them all out and doing block retaining walls .

Honestly I have no clue . You can see the growing point starting to change In the picture my guess maybe months no later than a year away from flowering  . I’ve had this plant for about 10 years from a small 1 gallon. Gets zero water . Full sun . Takes my desert heat no problem always looks flawless . Offsets heavily . So there are several replacements for it :)

It’s crazy looking for sure growing like that. Not much room for more leaves, has to grow vertical whether it’s ready or not haha. 10 years though, not gonna lie that’ll make a grown man get emotional

Looks like a yucca! That’s super cool. Do the leaves feel similar to a yucca or dasylirion? Looks super similar to a yucca stricta that I have
