Palms of Austin, Texas

Thought I would start this thread to showcase the kinds of palms growing in the Austin area. I lived in Fort Worth before I lived here and I’ve always thought it was so cool driving south on the 35 and all of the sudden seeing tall Washingtonias as you get close to Austin. Nowhere near SATX, but there are a lot of really old filiferas and sagos and sabals and canary’s and they decrease rapidly as you drive north. Dallas has impressive specimens but they still get more nights below freezing, and 61 vs 65 in January makes a difference.

Post the most impressive palms in the area

This photo was taken just a few weeks before the freeze that sadly killed all of these (from what I've seen). This was probably the most palms you could see in any location from the i35 in  Austin. This is heading south on 35 just south of 290 overpass.

Hope to see this in 15 years time again

North Austin, off braker lane about a half mile east of the i35.

These are growing in a North facing location, and have not been trimmed since the winter storm. Great mix of palmettos and Mexicana. This is maybe only half of them on the property. There are literally hundreds of volunteers as well. Some of them quite big and clearly have been around since before February

Austin needs to look for filiferas.

Everything on the market now is a hybrid. All the pure looking filiferas you see around are pretty old.

I'm trying to find good filiferas around town to eventually collect seed from.

More shots from just before palmagaeddon.... Austin sure had some healthy looking Robustas.

Ive only lived here a few years so post your pictures of the tallest/oldest palms in Austin

Robusta and Hybrids are fine in Austin outside of the really major freezes (such as this past February).

Tallest washy in Round Rock — that I knew of anyway.

Honestly it doesn’t look that tall. I’ve seen some 2x or more taller in New Braunfels (some killed in freeze, some lived). Someone had some 70 footers along the Guadalupe River. Sadly I think most of those died.

Tallest in Round Rock. Obviously there are taller ones in ATX and further south.

Jamestown Drive by 183 in North Austin. Pic was from 2019 so a few feet taller currently

Robusta leaning hybrids - left one survived the freeze and has put out like 5 nice fronds and right one is lifeless. Definitely a good spot for future seed collection.

Apartment complex off metric blvd about a mile north of Braker. Some really healthy and tall looking Washingtonia hybrids. Both canariensis are coming back nicely. Robustas perished but some growing next to base of trunk that have to be at least a year old and freeze survivors. Also two different other date palms, look like Sylvestris but have to be a hybrid of some sort, only one pictured . Even protected by the larger trees overhead it still would have been too cold.

When I lived in Austin, there used to be some beautiful palms at the GSD&M building on 6th.  I imagine they were toast from the freeze?

The ones at fairmont rooftop a few blocks away are recovering so I would assume at least a few of those would be recovering

Good news - looks like they are all recovering. A couple have deformed fronds, but all pushing green.

Survival of the fittest. I posted about these earlier with an old pic but left one is looking really heathy, this pic is a few days old and I drove past it today and it’s already put out another frond. This one is protected from the north (for now) and is near the 183 overpass which certainly generates some extra heat

Two healthy filifera/hybrids at Patton Court Motels off of 290. These had a full crown by mid may again. This pic was from just before the storm and they look about the same now

Quite a few hybrids recovering at Hula Hut. I’m actually surprised/encouraged  by how many palms survived in and around Austin considering how many consecutive days below freezing we had.

Could not believe my eyes this morning... this is a big Robusta leaning hybrid off metric and Kramer that is just starting to push green. You can’t see it in the picture really, I’ll try to go back and get another one at some point but I am amazed.

Interesting!

What is the dead looking tree/branches to the left of the photo?

Some sort of ash or oak tree. They got hit really hard in that area. This video is a half mile away taken in early June

Wow.... that is hard to believe. Really changes the look from what should be lush summer into a wintery looking scene.

I take it they're dead and irrecoverable?

Yes most are likely dead, we were in a significant drought leading up to snowmagaeddon, that saved a lot of the palms but killed a lot of the deciduous trees. Ash trees were hit the hardest

North Austin Trachycarpus x 5. Shaded by a large oak tree so these always look healthy

Filibusta growth rate in Central Texas:

second pic Spring 2019

These probably grew slower since there were 3 right next to each other

Well I’ve posted enough New Mexico palms recently so here are a few Austin palms. I’ve seen more dead ones than alive ones so far.
