For cold weather with rapid growth, which one do you prefer?

Nitida is not a fast grower and doesn't look all that different from a smaller washingtonia. Its not a bad palm but doesn't give the same feel a mule does. I would chose the mule any day. If you're looking for a livistona alternative decora is my favorite.

Kailua, Oahu HI. Near the beach but dry!

Still have a garden in Zone 9a Inland North Central Florida (Ocala)

Inland area beyond the sea.  Zone 8.

I have both palms that are of a smaller size growing in zone 8B.  At this point the nitida seems to be a faster grower although it does have thicker trunk.  At this point I wouldn't say either is a rapid grower.

With plenty of heat and water L. nitida can be quite fast.  Mine outgrew a Washingtonia hybrid here in Texas until our February freeze took them both out.  Mules likely grow faster in a cooler environment.  Both are only going to be long term without winter protection in 8b or higher.

Tell mine to wake up then!  Now that it's been in ground for over a year I hope it gets faster.

I have finally bought a palm mule.  Advice on its care?  It will go in a semi-shady area (about 6 hours of sun), I hope that is enough.

Rooting for the Nidita to make it long term.  But hands down Mule all the way.
