Update on the stuff in the backyard

Update 1: As some of yall know my bottle palm hates me, i didnt expose it to sun properly. It looks terrible right now, with the exception of this! The spear that has been growing since the end of winter is now opening!

Update 2: There are now 2 Queens in the backyard! This one was extremely pot bound, i repotted it into a larger pot before i ended up planting. The Sabal that was in the ground back here finally bit the dust after no movement. I replaced the dead sabal with this queen.

Update 5: The big Queen in the backyard is pushing out new fronds as it should be. There was some cold damage in the growth point somehow, but all of that is pushed out and has been pushed out for over a month. This thing is going to be a monster.

Edit: I must add that i put a zip tie around the frond that was the 2nd newest as of the beginning of Spring (newest wasnt out completely out yet), im doing this to track growth over the growing season.

Update 7: Here are the Pygmy Dates! Most are showing new growth at this point except for a few. The ones that have shown growth have shown a decent amount just recently. The smallest one, which was still a seedling, has died. That leaves 9/10.

I have a question about the big Queen in the front yard. The lower fond is starting to turn yellow, but most of the leaflets have turned brown with black spots, and have curled as if they have been burnt. Not sure what's going on here, will try to get some pics tomorrow morning.

@JLM Probably nothing to be concerned about with the largest queen palm, thats normal when they are that age. Browning tips and yellow/orange spots on old fronds in older palms in sandy/fast draining soil is usually a potassium deficiency, and is typically a widespread and very noticeable problem.

As long as you see healthy new growth I wouldn't be concerned with one oldest frond going bad. The palm is most likely pulling nutrients from the frond and recycling them into the new growth.

When it browns out, its safe to remove the frond by cutting it close to the trunk/stem.

To me whats wierd is the pattern its browning, most of the leaflets are brown except the top of the frond, but there are some leaflets further down that are still yellow/green. Hopefully its nothing to worry about!

My Hyophorbes seem to burn even when they are put out in the shade here. My Spindle may survive but the Bottle looks fried, still hoping it comes back.

They definitely burn worse than ANY other palm that I have ever grown.

Starting on what i left off on last year. The bizzy! It survived the winter pretty well, especially since i only protected on the nights that threatened lower than 28F. It experienced several frosts and a few freezes in its first year of life, maybe thats a good thing?

This queen is now the largest on the property. It overtook the size of the palm out front in just a couple of years. Mind you the one out front was planted as a 6.5 gallon, and the one pictured was planted as a 2.25 gallon. Both planted in 2019. And yes, those appear to be trunk rings, very excited!

Extremely proud of this one, my majesty. It survived the winter with almost no protection. It got protected one time in March when i had already cut off the dead frond.

All of my seedlings are loving the spring sun. I have some queens, washingtonia, and a few sylvestris in there. They have all been hanging out with the tomatoes.

I tried to upload almost 30 pics here, but the ones that post are the only ones that were small enough. Sigh. Anyways, the queen, washy, and sylvestris seedlings are all doing fine. The dwarf cavendish is loving all the rain we have gotten recently. And my oldest sabal seedling is really speeding up now that it's in the ground. The other sabal is potted and will be going in the ground soon as well. Both have fork leaves.

Ugh, seeing those above pictures of the Queen just makes me sad. It was completely defoliated from the Christmas freeze. It is still growing, albeit slowly. Next week we are expecting temps in the upper 70's to low 80's so that should certainly help it get going a little faster.

The fire ants are out and about. I went out this morning to find that they colonized my super mule's pot overnight and were still building their nest whenever i discovered it. I also found another one around one of my Sabal seedlings. Poison was applied to both colonies. It is spring time folks.

Planted 4 things outback all at once. Before I dig into that, I wanna show my telephone pole. The trunk has fattened quite a lot in the past month or so. 20 oz coke bottle for scale.

IMG_20230327_180908247_HDR.thumb.jpg.6afc4ef3e962a66fce8e0de26982791a.jpg

Next up is my date seedling, supposedly a sylvestris but we will see. It's going pinnate pretty quickly. It's probably closer to a year old now.

IMG_20230327_181058799.thumb.jpg.ebe4dce847356d732f5ff013a41bc017.jpg

IMG_20230327_181102477.thumb.jpg.83c6edecfd7f729a0fa24883c31d774c.jpg

Next is the sabal seedling which has been in the ground for over half a year now. It doesn't appear to have taken any damage from the Christmas freeze.

IMG_20230327_183449389.thumb.jpg.fa5feed9c6155e94965ef0d9fc849224.jpg

Onto the super dwarf cavendish banana, I thought the main stem was going to survive, then it stopped growing and it finally just fell over. I went ahead and cleaned it up, it is now primed and ready for the growing season ahead.

IMG_20230327_183456877.thumb.jpg.647d37b238a1db75b7edf6bfc1c7bf03.jpg

Now for new plantings. First is the ice cream banana. We will see how big this thing gets.

IMG_20230327_183435070.thumb.jpg.ad7e1ed3a8d17eb02cdb629f3d139d39.jpg

Now the last banana, a regular dwarf cavendish.

IMG_20230327_183438999.thumb.jpg.f319f3da04b5da9ea996f64b446329e5.jpg

Next is the super mule which I am EXTREMELY excited about! This thing has already been growing at a decent pace in a pot, should be faster in the ground. It was actively growing roots when planted, so it should establish quickly.IMG_20230327_183407952.thumb.jpg.d80ce74a3b6658da68f5823e782216e9.jpg

And the last of the new plantings is the cat palm. This thing has decided to flower, which I did not have on my 2023 palm bingo card.

IMG_20230327_183356109.thumb.jpg.06f3da7a44e47c28b6f3e024f8d93a93.jpg

IMG_20230327_183427294.thumb.jpg.3d945e31b25d448e970ae8c06c29640b.jpg

Now let's get a wide shot up in here. This area of the yard will now be known as the plant corner, as this is where most of my plantings are now confined. I hope these things aren't too close to each other. Luckily I never ran into any Queen roots so the dwarf cavendish should be just fine. I think they are spaced out just enough to where they should all be happy.

IMG_20230327_183347998.thumb.jpg.b8651b3172885e6778d8f6fbfbe811f6.jpg

Disclaimer: In the pics the plants have not been back filled, but I did that after taking pics because the sun was going down and I wanted to get pics while there was still enough light.

I am very excited for this growing season!

1 hour ago, JLM said:

Planted 4 things outback all at once. Before I dig into that, I wanna show my telephone pole. The trunk has fattened quite a lot in the past month or so. 20 oz coke bottle for scale.

Next up is my date seedling, supposedly a sylvestris but we will see. It's going pinnate pretty quickly. It's probably closer to a year old now.

Things are progressing nicely. The queen is starting to get it's head back and the flowers of the cat continue. Not sure what happens beyond this stage.

  • 4 weeks later...

Well apparently i missed a part of the flower from the cat palm. Ill have some pics of these palms later. Right now i want to officially make this thread about both the front and back, not just the back. The first thing i want to show is the change of the front bed. This pic was taken last year on June 1st.

I have made many changes on top of taking out the white rose bush. I planted a double Pygmy Date in place of the bush. About a month later, we bought a bunch of flowers from the box stores. Before planting these flowers, i dug up the other 2 rose bushes and planted them on the south side of the house next to the ditch. They are both right behind the post with the satellite dish on top in the above picture. With these bushes out, it left a clean slate to work with. I took my Hawaiian Ti and planted those in place of the other two bushes. The flowers went in sporadically throughout the bed. Here is what it looks like as of today. Most of these flowers are supposed to be perennials, but we will see.

Now here is a status update on the Queen out front. Both queens were defoliated after the Christmas freeze, with adequate protection they were both able to continue growing after the freeze. As of today, here is what it looks like. Also, this one is now showing its first trunk rings.

My Pindo had some spear issues, just like my Mule seedling. The Mule was protected, the Pindo was not. Both suffered the same issue for some reason. The Pindo recovered very quickly and is now pushing out full spears. I will be clearing out the grass from around just about every palm in the yard soon. The weeds are encroaching on my Pindo right now.

The Mule seedling is now pushing some visible growth after about 2 months or more since spear pull. I cut it back about a month ago so i could treat it better. Here is the new growth which has just appeared today or yesterday. It was not there on Thursday, i know that much.

The next thing is my basjoo bananas. These were cut back in February iirc. They have recovered nicely! I am contemplating removing the elephant ears soon. Not sure yet.

Next is another new addition to the front yard. I decided that the new Satsuma Mandarin tangerine tree would work best in the front yard. Hopefully this tree will be able to grow out like its supposed to instead of leaning like my dancy tangerine did. These are also supposedly more cold hardy as well, which give me more comfort in planting it out here.

Heres an update on my Foxtail. I got lazy in March whenever we had a low of 29F. I didnt tie it up like i had been doing all winter, i was burnt out. So, i placed a sheet over it with christmas lights on the ground around the palm. The sheet trapped enough heat to at least keep the trunk and growth point from burning at all, with the lower half of some fronds also being untouched. Everywhere else got scorched. Ill be cutting off this dead material soon. A new spear is opening as well.

@JLM that queen was looking really good, hope it recovers

Both Queens now beginning to open undamaged spears. My backyard Queen will probably take another year or two to fully recover its crown to the state it was in pre freeze. It had almost 2 year old fronds on it still before all the fronds were zapped. That palm only killed off maybe 2 or 3 fronds per summer. I cant wait for it to have a good crown again, the yard has felt very bare without it. It also sounds strange still, not hearing all those leaflets hit each other in the wind. I expect by the end of June ill have 1 full length frond with another emerging.

With this small update im gonna try a different way to get these pics in here. Hopefully they will load this time.

I wanna start with my Mule seedling, its future looks bright! I have cleared out some space around it since this was taken. Photo taken on 5/12/23:

Next was from today, my basjoo bananas are looking good right now. I dug up the elephant ears and threw them into the trash. Be gone! These bananas should do better now without quite as much competition. They also have pups all around them now! I still need to do some weeding though before it gets out of control.

Update as of 8/19/23:

Gonna start with the backyard bananas, they look amazing!! Very proud of their growth over the past several months. Ice cream front middle, Dwarf cavendish back left, super dwarf cavendish back right. Question, when do these things flower? I know theres different mature trunk heights for each one but i do not know what they are, research tends to yield different numbers per website so i am asking here. (Cat palm snuck in bottom right)

Some changes that will occur with these is an expanded area of no grass around them, as well as a nice layer of fresh mulch, also their first round of fertilizer. This will happen at some point this week.

Next is the backyard Queen, its finally looking like a palm tree again after that brutal cold snap back in December. All palms will be fertilized again soon as well.

Now for the next one, it is a recent planting (just done last week). I was going to plant along the entire side of the patio but every other spot i dug in i found pipes from the underground pool that existed here well before we moved into this house. Unfortunately they tore it out, it would have been a wonderful opportunity for landscaping had they left it 🙂

The next two, i am having a hard time deciding which one is my favorite! Its the super mule and the Bizzy. Both have put on a good bit of growth this year. I absolutely love the color of the Bizzy and how big the fronds are getting, but at the same time i love how the fronds of the super mule look like queen fronds but twist like butia. Not sure where the jubaea influence is, maybe its not very strong. The blue zip tie that was used to separate the super mule from the regular mule has popped off due to trunk expansion.
The bizzy has put on nice growth this summer as ive already said, its exhibiting a very attractive blueish silver color, pictures do not do it justice. It was germinated from seed likely in early 2021 and planted later that year. It is the ONLY survivor out of that batch of seeds unfortunately, i would love to have more of them. I wish i was in a warmer zone lol

Changes to occur with this are expanded beds, adding in mulch to those beds, and fertilizing. Ive finally gotten onto a watering schedule with everything that the hose can reach, as we are now entering drought and its been hot as all get out since July.

Only thing for now from the front yard is the foxtail, which has put on some nice growth this summer. One of the fronds appear semi stunted but the next and most recent frond is the biggest frond it has ever produced. New spear coming in as well, its trying to get that classic young foxtail look to it again. Trunk is also fattening.
