New Zahidi Orchard

Hi,

Wanted to share some details of my Zahidi Orchard I'm installing.   A really good friend of mine has 100 Zahidi's and its that time of the year to clean up palm tress and cut any offshoot's. Well he made a deal I could not pass up and had 30 offshoot's removed.

Some of the offshoot's

If you love palms like I do a truck going the the road full of them always catches your eye.

Some cleaned up and in 15gal pots waiting for me to place in the field. I did this so they do not dry out.

On my Medjool palms I used 1in polytube irrigation because the run was about 2000ft and for this setup I picked 3/4 polytube because the run is around 1200ft.

Going to use rain bird 12gph pressure compensating heads and a Hunter valve and controller. Have used them both in the past and had really good luck.

Yes I believe as long as I keep the hole moist but not flooded they should come right back.

The key is to pack the palm in the hole really good and make sure no air pockets are around the base and keep it wet.  My tool is the back of the shovel around the palm and then water do it again. Water, etc.

@mydateplams Wow quite an operation! Commercial I’m guessing?

Not commercial.  I caught the palm bug and have been real sick since.  its just my collection guess you could call it palm hoarding.

@mydateplams that's pretty awesome. Today I had the opportunity to help someone remove multiple shoots off a male Zahidi today. He ended up giving me one of the large pups as payment for helping. Here is a before and after.

Those suckers are high up.  They should root no problem if you keep them wet.  I think the Zahidi is one of the best looking palms in the Phoenix Dactylifera family. They have smaller fruit so they are not as popular as the Medjool with its larger fruit or the Deglet with its more sugary fruit.

Good work! Cutting the offshoots is some hard work. Having the right tools is night and day. What did you use to separate them. Did you use a chisel  ?

Here is an update. I have two rows in. Each row is 12 trees. I have one more row of Zahidi to plant and one of Medjools.  I put in the 3/4 irrigation using 12 gph drip heads. They seem to do good. I was using two 5 gph heads.

I'm pushing 140 trees.

I wanted to add this advise not sure if it will work it should. I rubbed silicone on the top of the fresh cut fronds to act like a band aid and retain some of the moisture and keep them from drying out.

@mydateplams three of the shoots were about 6' off the ground. And yes, thankfully I took one of the lower shoots which had roots on it already! I agree with you on being one of the best looking in that family.

Yes it was very hard work especially trying to lower the upper shoots to the ground without dropping them. The owner had two very large and sharp chisels and a chainsaw. We used both tools to separate the shoots.

Make sure to tie the fronds up really tight and if you have shade cloth or burlap rap that around.

Hi,  With the weather being so wet I have had a lot of growth. You can see the difference between the Medjool and the Zahidi.

The Zahidi have the yellowing.

After I Pollinated I used paper bags over the bunches to protect the fruit and to keep the pollen on. I've been told by a few palm workers the dates ripen better and they have a higjer chance if polynationvwhen they start out in bags
