Damage assessment after Texas freeze - need to find cold hardy palms

OK... so I need to start looking for Canaries again in the Houston area (not that I have ever stopped doing this). Until now I was not lucky to find any to have the size that I was looking for. And I am not going to go to buy from these "nice" nurseries that charge an arm and a leg for a full grown one in a million years.  

In this time I planted the Sago palm that I got the other days to replace the dead one.

USPS messed it up for me... a seller from eBay sent me on Monday four Filifera Saplings and... I just got them today. Which is outrageous considering he sent them also with Priority mail and they came from Las Vegas, not from the north of US...

Below are the photos with how they looked when the seller sent the photos with them to me and how they looked today when I got them and also potted them. I don't know if they will survive or not, I hope they will.

I had the same thing happen with USPS twice this year. Also right now one UPS package is missing. That one I deserve a replacement or refund, but the seller seems to think it will arrive. Doubt it.

Hard to replace plants.

i have never shipped or had Filifera shipped bare-root. Maybe they hate bare-rooting in the first place. But yours doesn’t look better than what I got, I declared the Trachycarpus wagner x Nanus dead. The shipped only wrapped it in a wet paper towel and was dry by the time it arrived 10 days later from Mansfield, Tx!

Do they look as they will survive? I will give it a week or two and see if they start moving, if not....

The root are dried out.  Hope you did not pay too much for them. 

Someone was selling sabal palmetto seedlings on ebay bareroot!  No way will they survive..

I don't know but if you look at the roots in the before an after picture, there is a significant difference.

There is a significant difference in all of their body, not only in their roots, unfortunately!

Hopefully the post office will get their act together soon or they will be driving small businesses out of business. Lately 3 day shipping can take 6 to 9 days which can kill live plants.

I bought a few bare root sabals, I’m sure it’s the same seller you are thinking of. The first one I bought has done great so far, the others have kinda dried up but still look ok, I’m hoping they survive.

That’s great! I’m in a similar situation with a filifera. It spear pulled over a week ago and we cut it 3 days ago. Tissue was white and healthy so now we’re waiting to see what happens.

Update from Dallas’s big freeze. 
all twenty of my unprotected Trachycarpus are growing including fortunei and wagnerianus.  Unprotected Brahea armata leafing out. And Butia odorata sending out bloom spike.

No I did not. In regards to the ones that are labeled Filifera. They probably are by my observations. I’d love to have a 3 year head start on the next freeze.
However a fellow Palm talk member Just sent me a few Filifera seeds from habitat. I have never got ahold of any before. I also have several seeds from Filifera that survived the freeze here. I’ll just be patient and hope to grow those. 
I would love 1 more Canary, but they take up so much of my yard. Both my surviving CIDP are females. They have had fruit before, so there is another male somewhere nearby that has pollinated them on occasion. But a male of my own is what I need. Even my Sylvestris and Theo Date were females I believe. Not sure if they are going to make it.

i have a couple more interesting small dates coming, I hope they turn out to be males so I can have some pretty hybrids.

Tony it looks like both your Washingtonia lived! Do you know the source of them? It is hard to to tell if they were hybrids, but even 2 of 3 of mine that look like yours that I thought were hybrids still appear dead.
So I am assuming you had pure Filifera all along.

Post any updates on other palms in DFW!

Tony, thanks for the update. Great to see these recoveries, especially the unprotected Armata!

I have a Bambusa Textilis coming back from its roots (only protected by some leaves) and I am considering another clumper. I am worried about hardiness. What has your experience been after this event?

I got the  original seeds in Austin from trees that had survived the 1983 freeze. The specimen with the most leaves went through 1989 1F but it was very short and I put a blanket over it. 
Bambúes ildhsmj is the only clumped I’ve tried snd it defoliated in the low 20Fs but can reach giant proportions in mild winters. My phyllostachys viridis is coming back strongly from the ground and is putting out giant culms.

I guess the people at Houston Garden Center think I am crazy since I go there weekly looking for Canaries and also asking if they have any idea when they will bring any. One of them was so nice to suggest me to try on the other side of the road at Moon Valley.  Of course I want to buy some babies again and enjoy their growth, so no Moon Valley for me.

Looks like we ordered the same Filifera seedlings from the same source on Ebay.. I have two in the ground now and appear to be doing well.  I ended up ordering a bunch from him so I hope they are filiferas!

I asked him a couple of times and he was adamant that they were..  Curious to see how these do up here as I am told they're the most likely to do well up here versus Robusta which don't do well long term up here.  We'll find out!

By the way, it seems that one of the Lowe's in my area had the 6.5 gallon ones Bismarckia at $59.98 but when I realized this by mistake checking on brickseek.com of course they were gone, although they still show at the Lowe's as being in stock. The idea is that I was told that their stock gets updated at 12.00 am and when I was at 1.00 pm there are big chances they have been sold already or... they don't know where they are.  

I had an idea to plant there two Bismarckia instead of the Canaries in the front of the house although the Canaries are more cold hardy than the Bismarckia.

Lowe's in San Antonio has Butias.  I would plant one here if they survived.  (They hate our soil, but do well in east Texas)

Wished I had picked up the Canaries in Bastrop Lowe’s. I found out they are making sidewalk wider after 25 years and my Canary, huge Live oak, and Phoenix Sylvestris are going to removed for grass! Ignorant planners! My live oak was more than 20 feet from street. My others 15 feet. I am in shock, the freeze, now humans!

Why do they plant them so close to the house!  There should be a warning label on CIDPs!!!!
