Backyard paradise in North Texas

OK some more updates.  We should get approval from the city for our new retaining wall that will go around the whole house and actually allow us to do landscaping.  Right now it's old cinder blocks that look awful, and nothing, just bare nothing with irrigation watering the foundation.  That is slowly starting to change, and will accelerate when the wall is done.

This is the wall as it is right now.. nasty, old cinder blocks.

IMG_20210710_070323.thumb.JPG.b5fb2ae38bf23c8f222b78a88b70ab22.JPG

This is the stone we are using to go all the way around the house, to match the retaining wall to the pool area.. it will look incredible, and will finally, finally class the place up.

IMG_20210710_070344.thumb.JPG.aac9fb02bf7f0fce37e2e32394968967.JPG

I've been hesitant to plant much of anything in the retaining wall area so roots don't get disturbed or injured when they start taking down the old cinders but in the front it's flat, so I took the liberty to plant my S. Bermudana this morning.. this was sold as 1G but boy I think it's much larger, and almost going full palmate soon!  I have another on the north side of my property... I am absolutely in love with this sabal.

This is our front area which was just empty and never sodded once we finished the pool.  We are going to do flagstone in the front, put up a nice bench and make this a jungle in due time..

In front of the window is a nice S. Minor, front right is a mystery Sabal Birmingham\Louisiana, and same with front left (either side of front flower bed).  I'm leaning toward Birmingham given how they look thus far compared to my Louisiana.

Our beast of a Louisiana.. this is at least 4yrs old.. it's a beauty.  We have another in the backyard that puts out a new spear every few weeks, it's beautiful.

W. Filifera seedling I got that was in a pot but decided to put it out here.  Since going in the ground last weekend already putting out a new spear.  It got eaten by a rabbit in March but has been rehabbing since then.

Front right side of my driveway I have a water drainage type feature I made, so I put two S. Minors on the side of it, and a Needle.  More of a natural habitat planting was my goal.

Side of our Culvert I decided to put two Louisiana\Birmingham mysteries that I got.  They will get a nice flow of water when it rains hard, and hope that will help them grow nicely.  Again, more of a natural type setting.. that and I had a LOT of these and had to find some spots.  They get great sun throughout the day.

IMG_20210710_072854.thumb.JPG.a158fd7bd37d20ca7ac86c41a4f27289.JPG

To the side of those above, there are three S. Minors planted along the side of this culvert.. you can spot them because they are caged in to protect them from the rabbits.

Next mission will be getting everything on the way back of the property... Thanks for looking!

I just realized we didn't update post finishing the front area.. we got the stones down, mulch, planted a bunch of tropical perennials, a nice hibiscus and of course some of my palms.  We just need a nice bench with some nice island vibe colors to it, and we're done!

S. Louisiana.  This one was in a pot in my garden since we got it in April, when I went to pick it up one of its roots was firmly in the ground.. I didn't realize pulled hard, and ripped it.  That was a few weeks ago.  I marked it, hoping I didn't damage it and sure enough it's growing quickly just like it was in the pot... whew!  You can see my mark.. it's moved a lot in a week.

IMG_20210720_065648.thumb.JPG.4cd1e966409ba5b89ae25ef80bf1f16c.JPG

W. Filifera that I had gotten earlier this year, nearly got eaten by rabbits, rescued, and here it is.. same one as @Jimhardy has.  Can follow along and see how they look later on.

Rhapidophyllum hystrix.  Really excited about this one.  We have four in total throughout the property, but hoping this one will be happy with a good amount of morning sun until about halfway though the day and solid moisture as well.  Will make for a great accent up against this wall.  It's putting out a new spear, but is extremely slow thus far.  Between the four, they have all put out about 1-2 spears this year... nothing besides strap leaves either.  Has a nice little wannabe trunk on it forming.

One of my W.Filifera is putting out it first fan.

It was one that I put in a larger pot then the others...

Washingtonia is one palm that really enjoys having an

oversized pot-the growth is much faster..

The one above was in a pot, put out the strap leaf you see, when it went into the ground it almost overnight put out that fan you see.. amazing what being in the ground does.  I've noticed, again, these LOVE water... I mean, you can tell the noticeable difference from being dumped on, nearly daily with water.  When we had the big rains in May, followed by a day of sun, the growth was unbelievably noticeable.  Can't wait to see what these look like by the end of the year.

I really enjoy watching the growth after a heavy rain and

then the heat comes on, just nothing quite like it...the hose

water here is awful and you can see it in some plants in dry years

with yellowing leaves/leaf tips-.

you can esp appreciate some good rainfall after going through drought conditions.

OK so I have a LOT to update on here.. There has been a ton of growth but the biggest by far is our Blue Java Banana.. this thing is HUGE and has now put out about six pups which I've put throughout our property.  I'll get pictures of the palms later but wanted to start with this.

Couple of quick updates..

I picked up five young (3 yr old) chamaerops humilis behind the waterfall of our pool.. They were rather tiny when I got them, but now eight months later, multiple fronds, many split leaves, some even look close to palmate and they have the little teeth delovoping already.  Excited to see these continue next year.

I was lucky enough to find a few S. Brazoriensis as well and one went by the pool as well next to the above.  This guy has taken off like a rocket this year thus far.. Can't wait to see once much older.

I got a lot more updates coming but we had a ton of growth across the entire property this year!

This is our 15G S. Mexicana that said through the February freeze.. it's put out about four big fronds thus far, and one more is popping up and about to open.  Doing quite well and really excited about this one.

Wow just scrolling back through this thread to update I realized how much my yard has changed... holy cow do I need to do some updates to this thread.

We built an outdoor kitchen and entertaining structure adjacent to the pool area, and it worked out that we built in the middle of our 15G S. Mexicana that sailed through the palmageddon, S. Palmetto, and added this new 15G S. Riverside in February.  We had a stubbornly cold winter this year with ice, and our ultimate low was 17.1 following by 18 for a few hours, 19, and one day of ice and 22 for about 36 hours.  Brutal.  I covered nothing and lost, nothing, not even my young, and I mean young S. Causarium which burned quite a bit but has already pushed out nearly half of a new split leaf.

S. Causarium (It's said this parent has taken 12F handily, so we'll see long term)

IMG_20220329_175937.thumb.JPG.e1d7b59ce4d4febed7badc55baa6de9c.JPG

One small part of sabal row up in the front of the house.  We built this massive 75' long 5.5' high retaining wall to separate the culvert, and hold the earth back from the house.  I planted 18 Sabals across the wall with soaker irrigation.  This is the one side with a S. Brazoriensis, Dwarf Sabal Minor, and S. Louisiana (left to right)

IMG_20220330_142644.thumb.JPG.ab470f56ea29b03133135acfd9df59df.JPG

Tiny S. Mexicana that went in the ground last March, all but burned with the winter uncovered and now pushing out a new palmate leaf.  Winner!

IMG_20220330_172610.thumb.JPG.11eed8d28f722daa0e0f5a334d7a51ed.JPG

My first S. Birmingham acquired last year as a three year old seedling, now with its second full palmate leaf coming out.  This one is a beauty, and replaced a T. Fortunei I lost in the '21 freeze.  Good riddance.

IMG_20220330_172802.thumb.JPG.1a3b5056e9c0cafbed97a2374ef89512.JPG

IMG_20220330_172805.thumb.JPG.6211534d1d86a09ffb8e077e5c19c701.JPG

IMG_20220330_172857.thumb.JPG.009cd2ee7516ba5af7a4065401204895.JPG

Anchoring the brand new entertaining structure is my largest S. Riverside (of the six we have).  This is a 15G that went in during early February when I thought maybe winter would leave us alone but after planting saw 17, 19, and 22 for 36 hours with ice.  Didn't flinch.  Absolute stunner and growing like a rocket thus far.

IMG_20220331_145501.thumb.JPG.86f08b39023fae9fc53b95c0928942ad.JPG

IMG_20220331_145508.thumb.JPG.bb1249aef7386399884cfe7a294bbc5b.JPG

I've got some things coming today to replace some smaller S. Minors in the front wall including S. Miamiensis, S. Tamulipas and S. Blackburniana (PD order).  I've got to get some pictures of the full sabal row up front on the culvert, but also my south side sabal row which has S. Mexicana,  S. Louisiana, S. Uresana, S. Lisa, S. Bermudana, and S. Rosei.  I've got a nice big semi-circle area in front of the house with a few S. Birminghams, S. Louisiana, R. Hystrix, S. Lisa, S. Brazos, S. Riverside as well.  Waterfall behind the pool has S. Birmingham, S. MInor (NC Variety, McCurtain, Warren, AK, and S. Brazoriensis.

S. Minor (Dwarf) I score recently from Nearly Native in Georgia, and drove it back.  This is in the front retaining wall.  It is already sending up a seed spathe and has seeded now 2-3 times given the old ones in this pot.  What a beauty, and a great price.  My family really enjoyed driving back home for 12 hours with a bunch of palms in the back! hah.

IMG_20220323_110154.thumb.JPG.eef60c77b691494cb128b0d7f0cd2fb4.JPG

IMG_20220323_134421.thumb.JPG.d7a822bcdafc682e96f125d464835005.JPG

I've started clear smaller trees, bushes, weeds, along my one neighbors line (probably 150' on one side in the back and another 150-200' in the front) and have gone ham planting palms.  I'll need to get pictures when I am done, and it's mulched.  I've put down probably 20 S. Minor (NC variety from Palmpei), Chamerops Var.  Cerifera, S. Birminghams, S. Louisianas, S. Minor (Tamulipas), and will just keep putting down Minors as my anchor with some S. Palmetto (baldhead maybe even as they are now germinating) behind them.  I've end up having at least a few hundreds Sabals along this line both front and back.  I'm planning on soaker hosing this entire thing, mulch, and then will really be a hell of a line to separate properties.  I even picked up a Serenoa Repens from Nearly Native in Georgia, but will have a few more shipped because, they are awesome looking and will grow great here.  I'll get pictures as this progresses.  By the time I'm done with this all (and this doesn't include the front of the property at all minus the property line) I'll have 500-1000 sabals of all varieties here.

This is the start of the back part, just the first 15-30'.  Just imagine this for 200' in the back, and maybe 200' in the front of my property lol.

IMG_20220318_150318.thumb.JPG.629b988f65d391c35c7dfa656c38063c.JPG

Front walking up to our entrance.  S. Lisa on the left, R. Hystrix back left, S. Riverside in the liner pot (now planted in the back), S. Brazos front big pot now planted, and S. Louisiana behind it.  S. Birminghams spread throughout the circle (smaller 1Gs not in view).

15G S. Mexicana that sailed through the '21 Freeze haulin' now and really picking up steam

I have a lot more pictures I need to take and update but you can see the small S. Palmetto in the background here.  I covered a select few small things one time this year on the first ice event but did nothing on the other events, and the very cold spells, even the 1 year old S. Minors I had planted everywhere.  They all sailed through with a little brown on their tips, but literally this is my experimenting process to change the narrative of you can't plant during winter, or during freezes.  The 1 year S. Minors which are maybe 6" tall, sailed through 17.1F and multiple freeze events.  Stop babying these Sabals, they are TANKS.

S. Rosei (South Side Sabal Row)  This one has a different growth pattern, and stature than the other Sabals I have.. very interested to watch it grow up, and mature.

I was able to acquire two Jubea Chilensis from a fellow PT'er (thank you!).  I've been in love with this palm and have wanted one forever so now I have two... They are very young, and in the ground.  I'm not expecting these to do much for a while, but we'll see what they look like over the longer period of time.  I'll get pictures and start taking some shots of the backyard.  This is all from the front.

If I were you I would take about 3 or 4 pictures that every so often you take pictures from those same exact 3-4 spots , so over the years you can see how everything progressed over the years from the exact vantage points  . Should be some great before and after pictures as the palms mature and get bigger over the years  .

If I were you I would take about 3 or 4 pictures that every so often you take pictures from those same exact 3-4 spots , so over the years you can see how everything progressed over the years from the exact vantage points  . Should be some great before and after pictures as the palms mature and get bigger over the years  .

Good call.  My plan is to take so many damn pictures it's nauseating and look back year after year.  I am thrilled to see the progress as the years go by and already starting to see this year as a big one with a lot of things going from strap leaves to either split, and many sabals in the back now going full palmate as well.  I have probably around 18 Birminghams all going full palmate right now throughout the property so this year will be fun.

Alright so just some quick updates... Being I am 95% Sabals, I decided to add one show stopper after doing my research about what others around here have been able to keep, especially through the '21 freeze.  I had one prized spot behind the pool which I planted an Arctic Frost Satsuma now two years ago and it got hammered during the freeze, and this year it died back further so I just dug it up and replaced it with...

Butia x Jubea (5G)  This was busting out of the pot and it's going to start taking off... Stunner!

S. Urensas - I already have two of these, one started as 3G, one as a liner, now this bad boy... It went down in the front retaining wall with the other 18 Sabals.  I've been pulling small minors from them line on the wall to make room for more trunkers..  It's on the LEFT then going right S. Miamiensis, S. Brazos, Dwarf S. Minor (flowering now), and a S. Birmingham.  We got 3.47" of rain last night, a ton of rain, and this sabal has already spread out this morning and looks twice the size.

Looking good!!!  Have you thought about tropicals while the Sabals grow?   If you don't won't to put in some taller stuff like Trachy or a few 10+'  Palmetto you could think about tropical plants like Bananas, ensete maurelii, alocasia and other tall stuff while the palms grow in?

Of course!  I have a big ole' Blue Java Bana right  where my son's head is on the right side there between the retaining wall and the pool wall.  It just actually popped out of the ground the other day and is already 8-10" tall.  I have another one up front as well and these are from pups that came from this mother.  It went mushy when we hit 17.1, but was around until mid-January.  They are great, hardy, grow for me to about 20', and bring some serious tropical look to the backyard.

We just got 3.5" of rain last night, so everything is waking up, and quickly!  I need to get some good shots of the sabal row(s) today.

Couple more new photos from things that made it through the winter unprotected (17.1F ultimate low with ice multiple times for multiple days)

We call this South Side Sabal Row and is located, obviously, on the south side of our property line by the pool.  I have some good variety in here and excited to see what this looks like in 3-5 years.

Hey it's partially your fault bro.  Every time I get an urge to buy or add something you just nod your head and agree LOL.  Was walking outside, and took some of the front retaining wall.  If anyone remembers, none of this existed this time last year, and I had a nasty, sloped down hill that just ended in my culvert.  It lost about 6" of dirt every year from the rains (last night is a great example) but now we have a massive wall.  Up on the wall, is ALL sabals....

Wall from the house and a view of the driveway going way back to the street.

OK some more updates... sun out again today and was a good time to go walk around and take some pictures.  Can't wait to see these all after this growing season.  Majority of these are going on year two in the ground so I expect some fantastic progress this year.

Back of our property.  I cleared all of this out from early last year, and sodded it over the winter.  It's all greening up and coming together.  Zorro Zoysia is beautiful!  Glad we chose it for the entire yard.  This is one side of the back area.

S. Causarium.  I got this one from Steve A, and the parent took 12F (so I'm told) which was a big selling point to try this one.  It got severely burned during the winter as we had a cold one, but look at this guy go now.  Hardening these ALL off from the beginning is my plan.  What doesn't make it on its own, won't be replanted.  This growth is after about two weeks now.

Looking good.  I think you will be praising those Trachy in 5-10 years!   You have so many palms what is your watering plan?  Almost all these palms are water hogs.  I would suggest drip if you can get the drip lines to them.

hahaha.... I won't be and secretly the ones I have are the only ones I will have :-)  Trachys got me in this hobby in 2020 like my gateway drug,  so it worked out.  Re: water... I just walk around every other day and hit them all with the hose for 30-45 seconds.  The sabals get drenched.  We have irrigation in almost the entirety of the lawn so they get overhead watering too.

Drip would be great but not gonna happen.. I just spent months laying nearly 30 pallets of this sod, and we have so many wires, pipes, etc in the yard... I just hit'em with a hose and call it good.  Rain in the spring helps too, and also I get my boys to haul buckets around the yard every few days and give each palm a gallon or two a water.  Keeps them busy and they love it.

  • 6 months later...

OK.. so I felt the need to provide an update here.. It's been a long time since I started my palm journey (ironically enough months before the '21 freeze), lost most of the things I had back then because I was naïve and knew so little, but what a difference just two years makes.  I've got now 250+ sabals in the ground, with a few Butia, BxJ, a JxB (coming soon), needles, and some other odds and ends, but mostly, I am a cold hardy sabal guy, zero protection on any given year with survivors making it and wimps being weeded out.   IMHO as long as a palm is even marginal in my zone I will stumble upon good genetics eventually by getting it in the ground as early as I can, weathering it through our winters no matter the time of year.  Again, I've been told not to plant anything post August\September.. non-sense!  I planted single strap leaf S. Minors, S. Palmettos, S. Riverside, etc and more in January right before our multi-day freeze event earlier this year and they sailed right through.  Sabals are tough as nails.

Here are some updates by popular demand.. this is not even close to being everything but I wanted to get a start on some updates.  Expect a lot more on a continuous basis.

Butia Odorata - We got this one at Lowe's locally last June on clearance for $6, spear pulled in the winter, but came right back after three days of 18F with ice\rain.  Doubled in size easily this year.

T. Fortunei - Purchased locally as a set of six to complete our pool build in October of 2020, freeze came just a few months later killed four of these, but this one was NEVER trunk cut.  Came back on its own.. not a fan of trachys anymore, but I'll keep these genetics!  This palm has earned a spot here.

BxJ - I purchased this palm from a local palm legend... Thanks Mike.  I'm slow, maybe quickly, falling in love with this palm... it's beautiful, and has doubled in size this year.  Working on getting a JxB to compliment in another area of the yard.

Some more as I go around and water things today...

Fun fact.. we love on a shallow water table, a spring someplace, and under the top 3-6" of compacted soil, we have blue\grey clay which is wet 24x7, and water runs through it like an underground river.  We had to determine where this cause the most problems in the back of the property (on a big hill) and get a 40-50' french drain (3-4ft down) built, which connected to some existing drainage 4" pipes that go another 250' to our nature trail.  It is now dripping 24x7 at the nature trail from these drains... crazy..  but on the flip side, my sabals have growth rate 2x others because of the constant wetness and moisture... bonus!

Sabal Row #1 (South side of our property)

Left to Right - Sabal Mexicana (left of the tree), Sabal Riverside, Sabal Lisa, Sabal Urensas, Sabal Bermudana, and Sabal Rosei

Sabal Riverside purchased as 15G and focal point of our outdoor kitchen.  I can't get enough of this one.. It's put on now an eight frond, and two seed stalks since being planted before winter was even over.  This thing will be incredible as the years go by.

Sabal Mexicana planted right after the '21 freeze, unprotected from then on out.  Get them acclimated young, and they toughen up!

Trachy Fortunei that had no protection, no spear pull during '21, blue java banana(s) in back, and sabal birmingham peeking from the right of the column in the flower bed  There is a very small S. Minor planted in that same flower bed blocked by the column.  I planted it last winter, and it saw three days of 18F cold, iced over, frozen, wetness, and took off to put out three spears this year.  Most Sabals are so tough, and even in NTX can be planted year round.  Don't listen to old logic.

Man, gotta say I'm loving this journey you're on. Thanks for making these posts with all the photos.  Obviously this year's heat has got your palms growing very well and they look to be establishing very quickly. Here's hoping this winter is on the milder side and with some good moisture. Can't wait to see how your yard shapes up over the next few years.

Cheers from San Antonio!

Thank you!  I'm mostly a Sabal guy with a few things in between that aren't but I was able to get some filifera survivor seeds from Collector and NBTX which I'm going to try in a few spots... if there is ever a chance at long term success it would be those on the washingtonia side.  I'm going to take pictures of the front sabal wall probably tomorrow at some point before the rain comes.  We just had our fourth child, first daughter yesterday morning so I'm in a brain fog at the moment!  Across from the sabal wall, and the dry culvert there is another peninsula I plan on putting some bald heads, and a bunch of sabal minors before the hopefully wet winter and spring sets in.

I've got about 1,500 various sabals potted up in the garden (a bunch of varieties, palmettos, and all the cold hardy varieties) that will live outside, protected with only a frost blanket in the winter.  I know an old timer who keeps his birminghams  and a variety of other sabals outside in pots, every single year without fail, no problems.

I've got a LOT more sabals to plant!!  Can't wait to see this place over the years.

That sounds exciting! Congrats on the birth of your daughter!

I think you'd definitely have some long-term success with a Washingtonia filiferaXrobusta.  Sabals are rock solid and more people should plant them. They are extremely hardy and don't have spines, unlike Washingtonia (and Phoenix sp). Your culvert area is going to be stunning and look very natural.  Where do you purchase your Sabals from in the Dallas area? I've got a few nurseries here but it's not been easy to locate a great selection of sabals.  We have palm buddha nearby and they have the best selection of sables in the area, but I'm more interested in finding more variety of the smaller sizes, like 1 and 5 gallons.

Hope y'all are getting some good rain. We need it bad here in Texas.

Seriously Tom’s got it going on there, a few years from now will be crazy to see. We were talking and both drooling over your jubea/ butia cross. That might be one of the coolest looking palms I’ve seen someone post a picture of on Palmtalk period.

Sabal Brazoriensis - Planted last August as a single strap leaf.. this one is a rocket as it sits in clay... wet, soggy, moist clay under that mulch.
