Was browsing fb marketplace just out of curiosity and found what I believe to be a surviving Washingtonia in DFW (Grand Prairie).

I posted these washingtonias about 3 months ago but had to drive by and check how they are looking. These are in Carrollton north of Dallas, on the property of a home that burnt down awhile back, so these receive absolutely zero care whatsoever and look incredible. The last pic one has more robusta in it and has been a bit slower to recover, but still pretty healthy looking. Hopefully some of the seeds end up on other side of fence so I can snag some

best looking Washingtonia survivors in DFW area?

Don’t see this everyday….. north Dallas off tollway and 635 what appears to be a Sabal Mexicana or palmetto  (based on the mature specimen growing in the yard next to it) growing out of a crack in side of road. I think we’ve all seen a Washingtonia do this but it is super surprising to see a Sabal do this since it probably is a few years old at this point. I’m sure the landscapers or a car will mow over it at some point but cool to see nonetheless

Those are looking pretty good. @Cade

Unfortunately the house a couple of blocks away from me in Bellaire/Myerland that had three large surviving queen palms just had them cut down. I was looking forward to getting seed from them...  All of the other ones I have kept an eye on have died over the past year. I assume the huge one behind Buchanan's nursery is doing fine.

Any recent pics of the lone queen palm that survived out in Katy? @Xenon That's the one I really want seed from.

No the queen behind Buchanan's died last year late summer

The one in Katy is doing great and throwing big leaves with no signs of slowing down. It really is remarkable; I'll try to get a pic tomorrow

Have you explored Tiki Island lately? I saw many recovering queens there last summer, wonder how many are still standing...

Damn Bismarcks seem to be better suited for the Houston area than queens! Lol great to see tons left alive .

Nice, I was wondering whether the Bismarckia at the Lowes down there had survived. They should definitely be more widely planted in Houston.

Another day, another massive Filibusta discovery in North dallas. Off Preston road a mile north of 635. Like 30 volunteers beneath it

I stumbled across two additional surviving queen palms in Bellaire. The one on the left (closest) looks great, the other is struggling. According to Streetview, a 3rd one didn't make it. Its hard to tell from my picture, but the good looking one has a much thicker trunk.

The one on the left is by far the best looking one in the Houston area ! Yay hopefully it sets seeds this year did you see any inflorescence?

I couldn't see any. I assume they would be removed by gardeners though.

Damn lol what’s the name of this street if you remember? I might ask the owner to keep the seeds they are valuable lol.

How do the trunks look on all of these surviving queens? They are known to start trunk rotting after wet cold and then randomly fall over 2 years later despite having a healthy crown.

From the ones I have seen they are smooth and Solid   for now…… I believe the reason so many died is from the 2018 freeze when it got down to 18° most looked ok but starting falling over from the rotting issue  so pass forward to 2021 the damaged ones where no match for this again and they died …

Pretty amazing that leaving Houston (29.7*N) heading nearly due southwest on US-59, you won't encounter a sight like this until roughly south of the 28th parallel (~240 miles)

Filibusta here are a dime a dozen :P even in the cold suburbs

I did drive past a nice mass planting of pure robusta in that area at the Bass Pro Shop at 288 and BW8

Was looking at the Houston garden center (pearland) location and came across another queen palm that was alive this one definitely has a bad case of trunk rot it’s years are limited but maybe it will produce seeds …. I can get in person pictures tomorrow.

(Can't find that Brazos county thread anymore so I'll just dump this one here)

We used to have 2 large Washies (probably hybrid) in front of the Torchy's at Texas Avenue in College Station (one of the busy main streets). Uri did a number on both of them but only one came back, albeit slowly. The following winter ('22) wasn't kind either but I don't think it defoliated. The palm looked like it was going to recover fully in the spring of 2022, however, I think the drought conditions put the nail in the coffin.
*hats off*

That thing was almost dead 6 months ago, it went into sudden and rapid decline.

There are a surprising number of tall(ish) Washies visible from SH 6 and the main roads i.e Texas, University, College. The thinnest Washy I've seen is on Harvey Rd just east of Texas Ave. There is also a Butia across the street.
