Hey folks! Not to change the subject, but I've been meaning to share my Jubaea X Syagrus from Patric. I bought it as a strap-leaf seedling in 2017 and it was slow growing at first, but has really picked up speed the last year. The odd thing to me is how waxy the palm is! It's rather silver looking. Does anyone else have any close up photos of their JxS petioles they can share? I don't have much to compare it against.

Alright folks, I have plenty of small palms, but here are the largest of Patric's hybrid palms I have.  The darkest green one is Parajubaea cocoides x Jubaea chilensis. Then the larger one in ground is Butia x Parajubaea torallyi and in the container is Butia x Parajubaea sunkha,

@matthedlund those look great.  Have you ever protected, or do you leave them be?  I have Bx PJS growing out as well.  Not big enough to go in the ground for another couple years I think.

I wrapped my Butia x Parajubaea torralyi and Parajubaea cocoides x Jubaea last winter for about 7 days during a freak coldspell. Otherwise I haven't, so the coldest they've seen unprotected is probably about 22 degrees. The Butia x Parajubaea sunkha and the Jubaea x Syagrus will be planted out in the spring as they're filling in 15 gallon pots well.

Sadly my Jubaea x butia purpurascens did not make it, but the dwarf Butia purchased from him is still alive and doing great.  Both were planted in identical containers with the same growing medium.

Oh well....maybe I'll order another someday.

That's what I've secretly been fearing in the back of my mind. Can you share pics of yours?

I can, judging by the green you have I would *guess* that yours is a cross with yatay. I’ll try to grab a pic later today. My jxs has no hooks, but neither do any of my yatay crosses with Jubaea in either direction.

I see hooks on yours , so my assumption is that’s a cross with a standard butia. Correct?

Oh yeah, that's an entirely different looking plant. Well shoot, what do I have then? It's from Patric from 2016, sold as JxS.

As noted, the plant you posted looks very much like a yatay cross to my eyes. I have both JxY and YxJ. If I were to take a stab based on my plants. I’d say YxJ . Just a guess though. 😏

Anyone received a Patric order in the last couple months ? Or even gotten a updated inventory list from him ? Now that it's starting to feel a little cooler could be a good time to make another order = )

Looks like he's not immune to inflation either.  Glad I bought mine when I did, but I'm sure I'll get weak again at one point.

In another thread I recently posted some images of the P. Schafer hybrid BJxQ which is on that current list. As I stated, it is not only my fastest growing palm, it's also the best looking "mule palm" that I've seen. My only palm that comes close to being as fast is his JxQ, which he apparently has trouble with in producing more seed. Here is a link to some images which are unfortunately embedded in my "jungle", so the full majesty of this hybrid is hidden from view.

Hi 104˚, Lo 74˚

Those are amazing.. Tucson has got to be the perfect place for those mules.. and the tropical look they bring over queen palms considering their ultimate fails at in AZ..

No problems with yellowing obviously there!

Looks great..

Hi 104˚, Lo 74˚

Here is a picture of my P Schafer BJxS. I recently planted out another one as I’m curious to see if it will look similar to this one.

Yes, it’s really from Patrick. My advice is to be patient. It may take some time for him to get back to you but from experience he always pulls through.

Getting another one, will likely just make the area look even better! It's nice to see that other growers are achieving results comparable to mine. When I bought this hybrid, I also bought a ByxQ (Butia yatay X queen) because of the awesome one grown in LA by a member whose user name eludes me ATM (Keith something). His took so much freeze damage, that I think he finally had it removed. When I originally wanted to match his result (before the freeze), and was placing the order with Mr. Schafer, he said he had a nice large BJxQ too, so I ordered both. The ByxQ is also good looking, just not as fast (so far). I'm glad I ordered both.

Mine after 11 years from seedling including 3 years in the ground. He has always kept max 2 green leaves at a time, the rest of them got black spots quick and turn brown in a year, very slow growth rate too. I hoped it would have get better with time but seems like not.. 😂

Has a comparison I also got a Butia yatay X Syagrus from Patrick the same year (2012) and it's a master piece, I love it and it grows like a rocket. It has almost identical growing conditions than the above (BXJ)XQ

That (By)xQ is what I hope mine becomes some day.

The mystery of your BJxQ can probably be explained by assuming that in the seed which the "mother" produced, yours was one of the "runts of the litter". This type of thing can sometimes happen when creating hybrids, so it's always a gamble.
