I agree and prefer the clean trunk.  Even if the old leaf petioles were trimmed next to the trunk it looks SO much better!  I hate seeing them with 5-10" of thorny petioles randomly scattered around the trunk.  I'd almost rather see them with the skirts than poorly trimmed.

They do look better cleaned up.  But it is a chore to do it,  these palms bite back.  The dried leaf bases will eventually pull off by hand but leave the stringy attachments which need to be cleaned up.  Cutting the green leaves off will leave the bases which will have to be carefully removed by saw, hatchet, knife or other sharp instrument, or wait until they dry out and hand remove them.
