Here’s Big Boy on the right from 2020. He's about 20 pounds, see how fat and happy he looks.

Here he is now. He’s gotten old and bony - about 11 pounds - but more lovable than ever.

I took Sancho to the vet this morning. I always beg her not to tell me he's getting old, because I'm having a hard time coping with that. She thinks he partially tore his knee ligament.

I took him out the other night, and he hiked up his leg to "water the flowers," and the leg just never went back down. She doesn't think he completely tore it because he tries to put it down and walk on it, but he's hopping. He still tried to chase off a possum. Anyway, she mentions non-boarded surgeons and she's going to research brands of knee braces for him and... He's a trooper. I'm just not handling it well at all. He came home with pain meds, and my friend sent him some glucosamine treats. I kinda want to take my pain meds and just lay in the floor with him.

I can't tell if his leg is getting better, or if he's just as stubborn as I am. He'll try to run when I take him out and then he starts hopping. He's on gabapentin and another pain medicine, and I'm patiently waiting for his vet to recommend a knee brace for him. Honestly part of the problem is his weight, but I can't stop my mom from giving him a handful of treats every time she sees him. He's still just as happy and full of love as ever.

His new nap spots are either behind my recliner, or under the chair Spindly Bob sits on, and he's claimed an old pair of my sweatpants as his new blanket/pillow. I'll wake up to hear this scratching noise and it's him moving them around and building a pillow.

He can't jump in and out of the recliner anymore, and he still wants to kill the possums when he sees them. He's pretty perceptive, and when I'm walking him - if he knows I'm not doing well, he'll just drop his payload and go back to the house. If I'm ok he'll want to walk forever even though I know he's in pain. He knows I'm drugging his food and treats, so he won't eat until late in the day and then he wants to eat about 3 days worth of his prescription food. Smart little guy.

Interesting pet insight story for the day:    ....What a Door means to a Dog, when their humans walk through it..

Why Saying Goodbye at the Door Means More to Your Dog Than You Know

# Dogs Rule :greenthumb:

Oh man. Ever since Sancho figured out how to jam the lock on his carrier, I let him have total autonomy and freedom. But I can't leave the house without petting him and telling him I love him and telling him to be a good boy.

When I lived in my apartment and needed maintenance to come by, I always asked them to call me since I lived right on the other side of the freeway and didn't know how he'd react, and maintenance workers are always terrible about leaving doors open when they come and go and he's ran away before. Uhh Sancho didn't get off of the bed when they showed up, and he only moved far enough for them to pet him. Terrible guard dog, great roommate.

From the time he i could hear him yowling as he game down the luggage pick up after the 5? hour flight to CA from the breeder's location, i knew Ash was not going to tolerate being crated..  That was confirmed not too long after when he'd get so wound up -when i'd have to put him in his crate, Say to go to the vet-     that he'd aggressively chew through it cutting up his gums / toes, whining,  and then get so worked up that he'd end up sick.

After that / for the rest of his life,  he had full run of the house, except when we had company with whom he wasn't already well acquainted.

Even then, when confined to a room, even for short periods, he was not happy about it.. Was surprised he didn't claw his way through a couple doors a few times.

In the car / moving trucks, left to roam,  he was fine,  spending 98% of the time seated in his spot in the back, or in the passenger seat, ..esp. once on the road and not in stop and go traffic.   He had an " impatient " low and grumbly whine if or when we were stuck behind a red light.  We agreed that we both hated having to wait, even a couple minutes,  getting somewhere, lol.

After settling down, he'd sleep half of the time when on longer distance road trips.

While i did have to rescue a neighbor's Chihuahua that escaped their yard a couple years ago, others i'd been around in the past could've cared less if a front / side door was left open.. Human came up to it, dogs would sit inside the doorframe barking at the " intruder " standing on the outside of the doorway  rather than try to dart off.

Basenji are a completely different " escape artist ".  Open door  =  the observer standing in said doorway catching a quick glimpse of a fuzz covered bolt of lightning rushing through it, esp. younger aged pups.

Over 12 and 1/2 years,  Ash managed to get out twice..  Once was my fault ..He'd squirmed his way out of his puppy collar.   2nd time, a neighbor who knew him  ..and was advised - several times- not to open the front gate to the house unless he was sure Ash wasn't anywhere near the entry way,  didn't close it behind him when helping load a moving truck.

As expected, Ash took off and made it about 2 blocks away before i found him, after screaming loud enough that i'm sure the entire neighborhood could hear how pissed off i was.

Ash wasn't a fan of having to go back home either after his escape-ventures and growled at the person whose yard he ended up in.. He did the same w/ me the first time as well..

I had to build a 2nd gate further back in the yard to keep him out of the entry way so my idiot neighbor and the yard guys that would rake / blow that yard ( unil i told them to leave ) didn't " forget " to close a gate.

Older he got, better he did w/ not immediately darting for an opened door,  though i'd make it very clear to anyone knocking on the door that they'd have to wait until Ash was secured  ...or out back   before i'd open it. ( Great way to deter salesmen / weird, " Religion " peddlers doing " mission " work btw.  )

Overall, whatever " separation " issues he'd experience occasionally when left alone occurred in his younger years when he'd howl if left alone for more than an hour or two.

In training him to become comfortable w/ not always getting to go where his humans would, i made it a routine of leaving the house in increasing amounts of time... Say for only 10 minutes at first,  then 1/2 an hour,  an hour  through his formative years..

While quite independant by nature, Basenji still prefer that the humans in their pack are within eyesight whenever possible so ..even they can get a little anxious when any human(s)  they might have bonded with aren't nearby..

If anyone in the house were absent for longer than say an hour,  turning on the TV, saying things like  " Watch the house " / " good boy " /  a few minutes of " Good to see you " greeting  -when the humans walked back through the door-  helped a lot.

Rare, but even through his older years, he'd grumble / whine -a little- if he could see me working on something out front through the window, or hear me just out of view next door for too long ( ...by his standards, haha ).

Majority of the time, he was comfortable enough to know i wasn't going to be separated from him for too long and would be sitting comfortably in his chair / his spot on the couch when i came home from work ...or whatever else i was doing that took me away from him for more than an hour.

Since i didn't take him with me on my longer adventures after the move here,  i'd either bring home something " new " he could smell, or give him several minutes to sniff me / my shoes after a long walk in the desert.. Pretty sure he looked forward to " What is dad going to bring back next "

If i went out back, and he wasn't already right behind me,  he'd casually / lightly ( Most of the time, lol ) paw at the back door while giving me the  "..Hey human,  you forgot something. " stare.

Was amusing observing his growing level of impatience through the door when i took too long to open it and finally let him out..

That brat = definitely a mini me,  lol..

A few days late, but it's been 12 years since I pulled him out of the Montgomery County Animal Shelter in Conroe, TX (Houston urban sprawl for you non-Texans). IMG_20251227_092359.thumb.jpg.e47b75f39f14610cbf6f3c519fafe3ad.jpg

This is from an early morning biscuit run, he gets the egg from Mom's biscuits and if the sweet old lady is working the drive thru he gets a piece of bacon, too. We had to listen to UGK in true Texan fashion.
