Great idea!

Veitchias are one of my favorite palms - and I am happy that they seem to like our place...

Veitchia joannis - almost five years old, from seed.

Another V. joannis, same age. Just beautiful!

I ordered some seeds last fall...

Ordered 10 seeds of each species and got 29 sprouts out of 30 seeds...

No hijacking intended - I just got too excited while posting ;)

Next to X Foxy Lady, Veitchia are high on my list personal favorites. Fast growers, and they're a relatively easy grow, tropical looking palm in CA too, though not quite on a "Florida " level..  At least not yet.

Kopick Veitchias.. The first "tropical" palm i oogled over when i first visited the collection back in 2011.  If i hadn't moved here, i'd have a dozen or so 4 yr old specimens off seed i collected there.

Just half Veitchia but can’t be too choosy up here in Northern California. The other half is Wodyetia of course. Foxy Lady is a fast grower here.

Not so impressive...yet.  I think it's V. spiralis since the mother tree had a nearly white crownshaft.

A few more from Bird Key in Sarasota, 5/2014.. Yea the Coconuts there looks great too but these just say "tropical" to me.. Can substitute the Coconut "look" w/ Beccariophoenix, Majestys, or Coco Queens ( foliage silhouette, last pic. ) if i choose to. Wonder if the ones i'd planted around my old place in Bradenton are still there.

Great topic I too have a soft spot for veitchia. My V.spiralis with 4ft of trunk became dinner for a gopher super bummed it was stunning. I have since planted  a new one hoping it has better luck. Anyway 1st pi c is of a young arecina.2nd pic a true foxy lady .The 3rd  pic is what I refer to as my not so foxy lady which ended up looking like a skinny wodyetia.

These are my V. joannis in my beach garden These were grown from seed from the first palm seeds I germinated in Guatemala 30+years ago. The mother palm was hit by lightning five years ago.

These are about 14 years old and are 10-12 meters tall.

Doing very well so far - my own V. metitis, planted out half a year ago.

I have a few in the ground. Colors in the trunk never get old.

This double Arecina is my biggest and oldest.  15 years in the ground.

Height and close planting make it hard to get a full shot of it.

I believe this is Veitchia joannis. It is growing with me for about 5 years (from a nursery-bought seedling), but only a couple months in this spot. The rest of its time it was living in a black nursery container. The location is Pico island, Macaronesia.

Is the seedling and the tall palm the same genus? What is their Veitchia surname?
