Lake Wire - Lakeland, FL

Recommended Posts

There are some labeled plantings around Lake Wire.  The plantings contain some nice gems as well as some old favorites.  The plantings are labeled accurately for the most part, making it an experience more like you would expect at a botanical garden than a stroll down the sidewalk.  If there are incorrect labels, please point them out as I went by the label nearest to the plant for the most part.

Syagrus coronata

A close-up of one of the labels.  Looks like someone was snacking on Syagrus fruits nearby.

The next four made me think they are different species of Livistona.  The last picture are likely Livistona decora, but the previous pictures I'm not sure.  There are supposed to be Livistona australis and Livistona mariae present, but the signs were either uprooted or otherwise not near the palms in question.

The Pseudophoenix sargentii at this park are mentioned specifically in this press release: City of Lakeland Awarded Level I Accreditation by ArbNet Accreditation Program

The Pseudophoenix sargentii are currently flowering.  There will be some changes to this garden as there are a few palms being removed due to Ganoderma and a few in decline that are marked for removal like the 2-headed Butia.

The impact of Lethal Bronzing - almost every Phoenix removed from this collection.  All that was left was Phoenix roebelenii in this area and a Phoenix rupicola down the sidewalk.  There is what looks like a Phoenix sylvestris living on borrowed time further down, but since it is on the way out, I won't even count it.20220226_082136_Phoenix_removal_LW_smaller.thumb.jpg.00899e85f9b2be3963318f9d6723ddcd.jpg

@SubTropicRay I'm inclined to agree.  The label says Syagrus coronata, but there are some labels in this garden that are questionable or outdated.  An example is Veitchia merrillii for the area where there was once an Adonidia merrillii.  I'm not the best plant ID person by far.

What is your take on the palm I thought was Attalea cohune above?

It could be an Attalea but the canopy shape seems off.  It's more Syagrus-like.  That said, I'm not good at distinguishing Attalea.

No, I really don’t have a good grasp on Attalea species id. I used to live in Belize though surrounded by thousands of Attalea cohune and this is not A. cohune. I have 3 Attalea species that are all younger and love the genus. I read later posts on this thread thinking this is a Syagrus hybrid and I would have to agree that would be a good guess.
