This past week has been cooler than the weeks before. All days with a high around 20°C but less gloomy, rather very sunny and dry. Clear skies all day long. ☀️ Today has been quiet cloudy. 🌥️From tomorrow on temperatures rise up again into the mid 20s Celsius. 🌡️ Also expecting the return of thunderstorms. ⛈️ Would actually be good as this dry, sunny and windy weather dried out the soil. 🌴:greenthumb:

A cold 1.7C this morning just before sun up. Right out in the open the grass was starting to go a bit crunchy, but anything closer to canopy wasn’t crunchy. Still it’s a bit cold for this time of year. That’s more of a June July thing. Going for a top of around 20C and blue cloudless skies.

The reason for the cold mornings and bright blue sky days is that the high pressure ridge is sitting a bit too far south. This is due to a strongly positive SAM (southern annular mode) which measures how close the cold fronts and westerly winds stick to Antarctica. A positive SAM sees them closer to Antarctica and this year it’s been a record positive one. So cold fronts and westerly winds are missing at the moment. So it’s dry and clear and still. Normally we are getting strong westerlies that break small branches and new shoots on my bamboo groves, but not this year. Hopefully we will get more cloud cover and westerlies as we approach the southern winter solstice or we could be in trouble.

Always strange but also cool to think that you guys are actually facing winter, while we are facing summer. 😁

1.4C this morning. We were meant to get some cloud cover over us last night but it sat just a bit off shore, practically stationary for hours. Really weird to have such totally still conditions here with a complete absence of cold fronts in second half of May.

Today, we had a high of 70F (21C) at my location in the North Carolina mountains. Mostly overcast with periods of drizzle. Tonight, a low of 50F (10C) is expected.

Tomorrow through Thursday is supposed to be sunny or partly sunny, which will be a relief since it's been almost a week since we've had some quality sunshine.

A comfortable 82 after a hot ..but reasonable 97 here / 94-100 around the rest of the valley.. Last weeks fun has come to an end across ~96% of the state w/ just a few showers roaming the mountains along the AZ / N.M. state line. Can tell the air is drying out as well..  As mentioned yesterday, week ahead looks  ..typical late May pattern for the deserts / rest of the state.

Different story across the Sierras / higher Deserts ..and a few spots in / around the L.A. Basin where ...Lo and behold,  the " May -Soon " has decided to spread some wet and stormy love west of AZ. Haven't heard too much in terms of any flooding / damage -if any-, but storms / lightning activity has looked pretty impressive over parts of the high deserts north /northeast of Palm Springs through the late afternoon / evening. Some scattered showers / weak thunderstorms may be trying to move toward the coast before completely fizzling out in parts of Orange and L.A. counties atm.

Should mention, Aside from AZ, Vegas has also gotten in on the monsoon-like action over the past few days, as well.

May see a little more activity out there tomorrow before their taste of the Monsoon ends too...

Max of 71f/21.6c on the coast with 52% humidity. The max UV was an 8 with clear skies all day. It looked like it turned cloudy in London today after the morning luckily no cloud cover here other than the odd small one. The weather in London looks better next week however this week will still be dry and fairly sunny there whilst here on the coast it's mostly sunny all week however a little cooler. The ground is really starting to dry up.

Max of 22.3C / 72F here on Sunday afternoon. The UK maximum today was 23.3C / 74F in Wales.

Warm-summer Med (Csb) conditions are steamrolling in, right on cue. Quite an aggressive transition from the cool/wet spring, which is already feeling like a distant memory now. Nights are still cool though under the clear skies and where the ground hasn't warmed up enough yet. High pressure is in full control now though.

192254287_Screenshot2023-05-22at05_16_06.thumb.png.7ec654ade8d716234642e49d52cbf527.png

The rainfall suppression is becoming quite noticeable again due to the subtropical ridging in relation to the Azores high. I am having to water potted plants/palms every 1-2 days again now pretty much. The lack of rainfall and warm, sunny days is zapping the moisture out of everything. I have only picked up 1mm / 0.04 inches of rainfall over the past 10 days now. There won't be any rain anytime soon either. Over the next 10 days, southern and central England will be the driest place in Europe.

UV levels are ramping up now too with southwest England at level 8. The southeast of England and London will be approaching level 8 UV next week as well and it will continue to strengthen for another 4 weeks until solstice on 21st June. The Scilly Isles and SW Cornwall will be at level 9 UV in a week or two. I believe the highest possible in the UK is around 9.5 right around solstice in the far southwest i.e. Scilly Isles, Cornwall, Devon.

Max of 74f/23.3c with 42% humidity today. The max UV was an 8. Some of those south facing slopes definitely were at least 25c+ in the gardens today. The car thermometer where I'm staying is reading 24c since it's on a large south facing slope.

Here's the latest GFS (American) model rainfall forecast for the next 2 weeks. As you can see, there is a big fat ZERO for pretty much all of southern and central England. As dry as a bone and pretty extreme even for a true Med climate going into June, given that we have already gone 10-15 days without a drop of rain, depending on location. You can literally see where the rainfall is being cutoff completely across Ireland and northern England. It cannot move into southern England and especially southeast England where it is becoming increasingly Mediterranean-like.

ECMWF (European) model for comparison. Arguably even more extreme than the GFS for southeast England and London. Total precipitation block in place...

The Marsden fire will be going for 4 days now if they don't get it put out tonight. They damp parts down only for it to keep starting up again and again. These fires are going to explode 10 fold in the coming days/weeks with the dry conditions. I had a helicopter carrying water over my house earlier today going back and forth to a wildfire.

It's 18.1ºC/64ºF just after 8pm with nice evening sunshine.  May has been pretty pleasant, generally on the drier and brighter side and pretty average temperatures.  The hawthorn bloom was spectacular this year.  We've also reached the really nice time of year when the sun sets after 9pm and it stays light until well past 10pm.

A warm, but reasonable 92F at 1:15PM..

Looking to stay in the reasonable range over the Memorial Day Weekend / start of June / start of Meteorological Summer..

If anything, -as crazy as this may sound- starting to wonder where our typical, fore summer heat has gone..  I should be seeing indications of our first stretch of 105+ on the horizon but, while there was a hint of that occurring as we start June in some model runs about a week ago, those thoughts have been replaced w/ a continuation of 90s- around 103F heat.. Not bad, and slightly below normal in some cases but, as i mention right about now each year, if we want to start off Monsoon Season on the right foot, we need the heat..

We'll see just how long the heat behaves itself..  We know it can't stay content for much longer..

First look of the Season at current SST #'s for the Gulf Of CA.  Some warmth there, but got some work to do  to get to that magic 29C, esp. in the N. Gulf..

Max of 21.1C / 70F and lots of sun here on Friday. It is now 14 days and counting since my last rainfall. 18 days for some parts. That is going to go well beyond 20-25 days before any rainfall arrives. Potentially 30 days in places looking at the forecast.

You know the situation is going south pretty quick when Scotland looks like this at 57N...

More helicopters going over my place today carrying water west of my location to the Hampshire border. It may be a good idea to finish that fire break at the back of my property that I never completed last summer. Like you never know. Things are only just starting over here really and will get much worse. The humidity also dipped below 30% in southern England on Friday.

Also the IPS are meeting at Kew Gardens tomorrow (Saturday 27th), which I unfortunately cannot attend, but it looks like they will have highs of around 22C / 72F and crystal clear skies for most of the day. UV will also be pretty high too, reaching level 8 now around 1pm according to the Met Office forecast. Pretty good conditions for touring the glass houses and gardens in late May at 51N. London will actually be a shade warmer than Los Angeles on Saturday and quite a bit warmer than LA this coming week for those in town visiting. 👀

It's not a "few rainless days" though is it, Samuel. Some spots have gone 19 days without a single drop of rainfall. Many other locations across the south haven't had a drop of rain for 2 weeks. I'm at 15 days here since my last rainfall. This wouldn't really be an issue from say September - April, but we are literally about to go into summer now with a drought already developing/looming. The clear, sunny skies are nuking the ground and everything is drying out ridiculously fast this close to solstice. As I said, we now have the whole summer to come yet. And we know what happened last summer.

Here you can see some of the Met stations and how many days they have gone without rainfall. Only about 40% of the total stations are accessible, so many cannot be seen. You can add an additional drought day onto this lot for today as well, which isn't shown in the figures yet. It's only showing up to the 26th May.

thumbnail_image0-7.thumb.jpg.8311d37a6c7f4d4026228f9e6fb98cc9.jpg

Anyway it looks like the max was 24.1C / 74F where I am today. The nearby PWS is a shade warmer but it looks like 25C / 77F temps have been reached in places.

2074642636_thumbnail_image0-2023-05-27T175917_244.thumb.jpg.7ee7c7a2ed4a6e12bd23f2a6bd03bd61.jpg

The IPS members at Kew Gardens in London are being spoiled for weather today. Mid 70's F and clear, sunny skies.

The highest reading on a Met Office station appears to be 24.3C / 75F recorded in West Yorkshire. The UV is very strong out there today under the clear skies.

Max of 75f/24c with 34% humidity. The max UV was an 8 in London. This morning on the coast it was fairly humid however here you can feel it's not as high. Unfortunately we are still having wind coming from the north east which is very unusual for this length of time. Clear skies all day today. There's no rain in the forecast so sooner or later it will look like last year.

I said things were going south pretty quickly. I thought I could see more wildfire smoke across the horizon yesterday afternoon at my allotment. I was correct. Helicopters were going back and forth over my house again overnight with water. Literally passing over every 10 minutes, back and forth. Two military chinooks went over this morning carrying what I suspect is specialist equipment from Sussex into the fire zones. They were probably going towards the fires in my neighbouring county of Hampshire though,

Some places are now into their 20th consecutive day without any rainfall. So almost 3 weeks now since it last rained in places. I am at 16 days here since my last rainfall. There isn't going to be any to relieve the developing drought situation. Maybe 1mm if you're lucky. It's currently 20C / 68F at midday where I am. Still no proper warmth, but very dry and sunny.

Today's high has been 26.3°C similar to the last couple of days. At the start of the week it has been a bit cool with temperatures only around 20°C yet very sunny like most of May. UV Index has reached 8 already. Nothing but clear skies from sunrise to sunset plus a nice breeze. ☀️ 😎 I can't complain. Some rain would be appreciated though, as it's very very dry. 🌵

Max of 76f/24c with 28% humidity. The max UV was an 8.  Sunny for the majority of the days with a few clouds in the afternoon, not many though, then back to clear skies as of now. The weather isn't too bad at the moment but we could do with a Southernly wind instead of wind coming from the north east.

Chilly May morning in the Darwin region... in fact this morning's min of 16.7c is our coolest since August last year when it dipped to 15.1c  at the Airport.

A comfy 80F at 10:47PM as we end the final weekend of the month..

Still looking ...relatively reasonable as we start the week, ..dare is say somewhat " cool ", -by Phoenix area standards-  mid week?   Weirdo Wx pattern across the U.S. as we start June sure suggests another cool " -ish " down,  before another minor rebound next weekend..  Will this cool down be the last? ..before real heat arrives?  ....The official kick off of " Sunset Season " just a few days from arriving??   We'll see..

00Z GFS tonight:   A tease playing hard to get,  ..or maybe hinting an end to the " reasonable " heat of late here ( ...and the arrival of some heat, finally, for more coastal areas of S. Cal )

Obviously, just 1 model runs' " thoughts ".. so taking a skeptical view, -for now-.  Most other runs over the last several days want to prolong this annoying Wx pattern ( If you want some heat  > In CA <  ...aannd any  sort of Monsoon Season -here ..and elsewhere- )

 Let the games begin??

Regardless, Welcome June, and the start of Meteorological Summer...

Max of 20.7C / 69F here on Monday. Nowhere in the entirety of the UK has registered a single drop of rainfall over the past 24 hours. Very dry.

Helicopters have been going back and forth over my house again overnight and a thick smell of smoke is in the air from another nearby wildfire at Frensham. That is 2 separate fires within a 3 mile radius of my location in as many days. It is turning into a tinder box here again, just like last summer.

Now at 18 days since my last drop of rain here but up to 22 days for some places now. London will be the driest city in Europe going into Meteorological summer and during the first week of June, by quite some margin. Med conditions have locked in as expected with aggressive rainfall suppression. However it is still very wet in the true Med regions (Spain, Italy, Greece, Turkey), almost as if their Csb / Med conditions haven’t switched on yet… 👀

Even Scotland is looking Med-like going into summer. 26-27C possible there at 58N in the coming days… 👀

A min of 14C overnight. It’s 7am raining and 14C with 99% rh. Going for a rainy top of 18C. We’ve got a lot of rain forecast for the next week as we enter winter, and after a very dry May we need it. Here’s hoping for a warm winter with enough cloud cover to keep the 5 letter F word away.

Temperatures couldn't be more awesome for my plants right now. Minimum is around 63 F (17 C) and maximum is about 77 F (25 C). Humidity right now (10am) is 70%.  My yard has a microclimate and is always 2-3 degrees cooler than the rest of my town, where the maximum these days is around 82 F (28 C). This means that my plants are protected from heatwaves but on the other hand springtime comes later to my yard and winter lasts longer.

Do your plants have any issues with such low humidity?
