92F at 9:34AM  after a surprise, and kinda intense night time duster last night..  Maybe another round later?

Looking to stay toasty thru the weekend / into the first full week of September, albeit moderating slightly..  As you can see, chances for  🦄 #1 has been taken out / chances lowered  of the current  forecast for next weekend.  We'll see if 🦄  #2 remains as we get closer to next Thursday / Friday..

On another note,  ...Guess it is time for another West Coast Edition of  "Fantasy California- Cane  action"? 🤣 🙃🤪   06Z and 12z GFS ( still loading ) apparently hitting the Tequila a bit hard this morning..

🤔  Pre gaming for your Friday night on Labor Day Weekend at 9AM?? = May be time to seek some help😉.

High 70s? In east Texas? Holy crap. Maybe I won't have any more $150 electric bills for a studio apartment.

Fingers crossed.

Hard to believe that on August 21st we had less than half our monthly average in rain.

https://www.palmtalk.org/forum/topic/58557-what-is-your-current-yard-temperature/?do=findComment&comment=1072964

At the end of the month, almost 3 inches more than average:

89F after another rip snorter of a dust maker rolls through town..  As nasty as it looked coming out of the Mountains at warp speed.. Got maybe .01-.05" of rain here, and another nice covering of dust.  Hot weekend inbound..

...And the 🤪 GFS "Fantasy Cane" antics continue..

This time right overhead.. If only we cold lock in this particular scenario 🤩.

Obviously, its looking more and more like someone will get a tropical dumping next weekend, the question is who  gets lucky later next week..

00Z Tidbits data:

Rough Cat. 2 ( 968mb ) slamming San Carlos/ Guaymas, after raking Cabo as a Cat 3 ( 955mb)

Then dumping overhead.. Gotta love that right quadrant..   Bring it !    Been awhile since a legit tropical circulation payed us a visit.

Only just seen this post. Is that the Juania Australis over at Glendurgan? If so that has grown a hell of a lot since the last photo I saw of it. Not quite as big as that Salcombe one I have posted, but still very impressive and growing right out in the open with full sun. Also it looks like it has been stressed/damaged a bit from the July heatwave. I think they may have seen 34C / 94F there with a 22C / 72F overnight low. Hot enough to cause Juania some problems. They wouldn't have liked the 40C max and 26C minima in London back in July. This really is a crownshaft for the coastal areas of southern England. If they weren't so rare in cultivation, I am sure there would be much more of them planted around. We have put a few decent ones on the map though over the past 10 days!

Yes, I have made a thread on the gardens there. Have you made a thread on lamorran yet? The palms are mainly in gardens I'm sure private collections have a lot of stuff planted in ground that's never been posted here. @Palmsofengland mentioned they have a Howea Belmoreana growing in Cornwall, it would be great if you have any photos of that palm as I don't think one has ever been documented growing in the UK. Must be a lot more out there. The same with London as well.

I haven't done Lamorran yet, but will cover it later today as I have some stunning photos to post. You can add some of yours to that thread if you want, but we should use my photos as the base of the Lamorran thread. I have been using an iphone 13 for my pictures in recent weeks/months and you can really tell the difference. Very sharp with excellent colours. My Parajubara Cocoides photos are insane. It really brings the palms to life and does them justice. Unfortunately I never saw the Howea Belmoreana though. I saw the Howea Forsteriana at Lamorran and got a photo.

Like you say, you can guarantee there is a whole lot more stuff growing out there in private gardens. Did you notice any Bougainvillea's while you were in Cornwall, apart from the one in the Eden project? There is bound to be a ton of them around in places. What part of London are you in btw? Like specifically. There is a huge, stunning Bougainvillea at 861 Longbridge road in Dagenham, which rivals the ones in the Med almost. It was looking terrific last summer even, after a crap winter, one of the coldest springs on record and a below average summer, so it must be looking absolutely unbelievable this year now. We need an update!

....Including the current forecast thoughts for later next week/ weekend.

Looking west: Rough week ahead..  Then,

2117256658_Screenshot2022-09-04at09-29-45DanielSwain(@Weather_West)_Twitter.png.d0cb4abec91025f6c0e44bc86097fcd7.png

Where it will go, no one knows... But,  For now at least, most of the Spaghetti plots keep what will likely be Hurricane Kay ( once it winds up ) just off the Baja coast, and south of hurricane status as she reaches the offshore waters of San Diego, if it does..  Obviously, ALOT is likely to change thru the upcoming week, so...  If, over the coming days,  the track does shift a touch east, closer to Baja while the system is at peak strength, it could get real ugly in Cabo, Todo Santos, and around the Baja Spur.

2126309221_Screenshot2022-09-04at09-33-20DanielSwainonTwitter.png.2320567a2f6ef7d0d9720fe917a4d52e.png

One thing i will emphasize right now, NO.. Despite all the headlines that are sure to pop up through the week, it is very UNLIKELY this system reaches California as a legit Hurricane ...Let alone makes landfall as one there..  Yes, there might be a 1% chance such a scenario plays out, but..  unless 85-90% of the daily models start suggesting it ..over a 3 or 4 day period, don't bet on it. It has happened wayy in the past, could certainly occur again, but likely not this time.

Regardless, there will be impacts from the system itself.. Question is:  Who gets some rain, if any..    ....and what ( if any ) wind impacts could there be in S.Cal, or state-wide.   At the very least, humidity around S. Cal. ( ...and possibly Central and N. Cal. ) will go up,  and there will be a few days of great sunset opportunities to pursue ( so get off the couch / un-glued from the " Tube" and outside )..  Other than that,  ..Just have to wait and see how things are looking come Tuesday or Wednesday.

Track could head even further west by that time, or models could swing the path back to the east again..

Highly recommend checking in with Danial Swain at Weather West.. He'll be having a live discussion over Twitter regarding things Tuesday.. Would also check in with Levi Cowan, the Tropical Tidbits guy..

One thing is for sure though.. Kind of neat to be discussing the threat, ~small as it might be~ of " Tropical " stuff  impacting the WEST coast..    During a LA NINA summer.

Nathan: Thanks for posting the weather forecasts for the southwest! Right now, as of 3:54 PM, my outside temp. gauge reads 105 deg. F and 18% humidity. This is mild compared to the projections for the coming week. Not sure how some of my plants, even if well watered, are going to weather days of 110+ deg F. At least my cacti should be ok. 🏜️

:greenthumb:  Were hovering around 106-7F right now here

Since you don't see 4 months of 105-110 / 110+ daily highs thru the summer up there i might throw shade cloth over any cacti you have that might be sitting in afternoon / all day sun for the worst few days of this event.. While the toughest species can wait out brutal sun/ heat, you'd be surprised how many others will burn when exposed to constant 110F+ heat  and  full sun even though 105F+ temps. are expected here from ..give or take  late May until sometime around the middle or end of this month..   Don't water them at all either until you're back below 95F.

As for other stuff, in pots esp.  would move the most tender things out of any direct mid to late day sun  -if you can-

As warm as the overnight lows are supposed to be there, at least you aren't looking at anything over 80-85F.. Have noticed that even the tougher things i have stress more during this time of year when they don't have a chance to cool off after the sun sets..  Saguaro aren't a fan of the hot nights either.

As long as there are not any more 2018 events in the near future London has very mild winters for 51n. I didn't see any bougainvillea growing on houses in Cornwall probably missed it. What type of bougainvillea is the one growing in Dagenham. Is it the hardy or non hardy type. West central London, not central central  London though like the zone 10a part.  There's got to be some sabals in private gardens in london since they grow decently and the winter won't bother them. Phoenix dactylifera as well is ideal in London with its lower humidity than the rest of the UK and higher summer temperatures and lower annual rainfall.

I’m back over west London today doing deliveries. It is very humid and muggy out with light rain falling. Still a balmy 25C / 77F though in the capital. It’s hard not to stop for palm photos, especially when you spot some new ones.

The rain, which was pretty light, has stopped now. The grass in some areas is still very parched, as you can see above, but for the most part it has greened up quite a bit now. As I mentioned, it is very muggy and humid out right now. Autumnal conditions slowly creeping in.

A HOT Labor Day ..anyway you look at it..

102F here at 11:30AM.  Not atypical for early September.  What is unusual are the following readings ...At the same time,  especially around the Bay Area..  Will be curious to see if - or how many- neighborhood Wx there stations touch or eclipse 110F later.

Majority of Southern CA stations are showing similar readings, though not quite as hot as around parts of the South Bay, at least closer to the coast atm.

While late summer / autumnal heatwaves aren't unusual there, this is some serious🥵  ...spread over several days.  On top of that, maybe some  showers / storms by the weekend/ start of next week from remnants of Tropical Storm/ Hurricane Kay.

Would be something else to see highs on neighborhood Wx stations back home top out HIGHER than here today, and over the next couple days, ...in September..

While parts of the area ( Immediate coast ) may cool a few degrees, areas further inland / in the Central Valley may be a few deg. hotter than today,  tomorrow..

Keep yourself, and your gardens hydrated. 20-something yr/old guy died out on the trails earlier today here, w/ several others being rescued /assisted in other parts of town ...and this sort of heat is not unexpected at this point in the year here.

2:40-3pm Temp Check:

Bay Area: San Jose / surrounding areas, Wow.. having lived there, i can't recall ever seeing numerous 112-115F+ readings.. Will the Airport crack 110F today?  Being close to S.F. Bay, that part of town normally tilts cooler due to how onshore breezes  move south down the bay after entering at the Golden Gate. Gilroy, normally the hottest part of the South Bay, is actually running a tad cooler than Morgan Hill, jut to the north.

Just a quick note: we did it?

Currently 101 degrees in the yard and 100 at the airport. That makes 26 days over 100 and tomorrow should be 27.

That's pretty much a month of 100 degree days. In Idaho. I'm gonna have to let this sink in.

103F at 5:45PM as High Clouds from Kay start moving in..  3 or 4 days of cooler temps / clouds, and maybe some showers, -if we're lucky-  ahead. Great weather for some more plant hunting.

As for Kay, herself,  ..Still on track to provide some relief from the heat, and some rain to S. Cal. ...San Diego and Imperial Counties esp.

Looking around the rest of CA., still hot around Sacramento/ other parts of the Central Valley, but not quite as bad as yesterday.  Still plenty of 108-113F readings around town up there though.. same w/ the Bay Area. ( Highs in the hotter parts of San Jose are running about the same as here in Chandler atm )

View of the cloud shield from Kay, and the storm itself Centered just to the southwest of Todos Santos, BCS as clouds start to move into Central AZ, just before sunset.  Courtesy of:  College of DuPage True View Satellite Imagery.  Pretty impressive how large the cloud shield is on this storm.  Sunset should be good this evening.

84F drizzling and that is the projected high for the day.  Seems we have had an unusually wet summer, almost constant clouds with rain 4 of every 5 days.  I recall august was nearly 11 inches of rain and it continues into September.   A friend in the santa cruz mountains reported 112F and 12% RH there, very rare and here we are at 84F and rain soaked.

I look at the radar daily, and always see it raining your way, the past couple of months.  We have been bone dry.   Crazy dry.   It’s rained only a couple of times here since early June.  That’s it.  No wet season this year.

We are around 12 inches of rain short for July and August.  And it has not rained yet in September.  Irrigating a lot in this heat, and it isn’t enough to keep the grass from getting drought damage.  Palms are doing OK, but very slow this year with the lack of natural water.

Absolutely praying for any rain in the next week.   There’s a chance of some, but the forecast predicts rain every day, and at the last minute, it never comes.  The rest of Florida, other than the southeast, seems to be getting good storms.

Its kind of incredible as just a couple hours ago  it changed from a super light drizzle to a torrential rain,  like a waterfall was hitting the roof of the house.  The yard is flooded, probably 1 1/2 to 2" deep, it will take hours to drain down.  I don't remember september quite this, usually the rain is tailing off by sept.  I put down a bag of sulpomag a few days ago and now wish I had waited a few more weeks.

I’m hoping at least some of that heads this way.  We could use it.  Had a super light sprinkle here today.   Not enough to even wet the sidewalk so far.

83F and lots of rain on and off but mostly "on" today so far.  Weather report says it peaks  in 4-5 hours.  I kind of was thinking we already peaked.  We are under a flood watch.  This is the kind of rain that washes away your fertilizer if it is not controlled release.  Good side is most of my palms are loving it.

A nice n' drippy evening..

74F w/ a 71deg Dew point / 89% Humidity and on again / off again  tropical sowers since around Sunset..  Heavier stuff w/ occasional lightning is probably done for the night here but showers may continue for a few more hours before focus shifts toward the foothills / mountains north of town later.  While not forecast, some of the stronger storms earlier did create some dust / wind gusts in the 30-40mph range as they passed through.

Partly cloudy and in the mid 90s to about 100F for the low deserts, cooler in the mountains / 80s-90s across Tucson and Southern AZ  over the weekend, w/ another chance of showers/ storms if the remnant circulation of Kay passes over Central and S. AZ Monday. Dries out for the rest of the week w/some more low 100s back in the forecast by the weekend. Despite drying out next week, could see our first string of sub-80deg lows as we close in on the astronomical start of fall.

28C / 82F in central London this afternoon with some decent amounts of sunshine at times. I was down Fulham way for work, so was able to check out a few palms, including the mammoth CIDP in River Gardens. I didn’t have much time to stop however. The Robusta below is out near Heathrow, which I went past on the way back.

74F in the North Carolina mountains with partly cloudy skies. Rather humid today by mountain standards. It's been a very wet summer for us this year. Rain at least 3-4 times weekly for the last 3 months. Looking forward to the dry week ahead. Expecting upper 70s with sunny skies.

A warm, but not awful 94F at 11:27AM

After spending an entire day in the mountains yesterday, was followed home by developing showers that ended up becoming the best storms of the summer a couple hours later..

...A total " brown out " ..to the point where you could barely see the Medical offices across the street, heavy rain, ..heaviest downpour at the house of this years Monsoon season, winds that exceeded 86mph at Sky Harbor in downtown Phoenix, and roared through Chandler anywhere between 60 and 75mph, and lightning flash rates set on full tilt ( ..literally 5 flashes per 15 second period -over the course of an hour )

May do it again tonight as the final big push of remnant moisture from Kay rotates through the area before hanging over areas to the north of AZ tomorrow. Some showers may hang around far eastern AZ as well.

Compared to forecasts over the weekend, liking today's " thoughts " on the week ahead / next weekend..  Temperatures at least..  Could last night ...or anything we might get today  be the last of the rain for the season??  We'll see..

The weather was very dry untill the last part of August and September has been exceptionally wet so far lots of low pressure coming off the Atlantic. London Heathrow is already on 73mm of rain so far this month which is more than June July and August combined. It's more sunny this week but with clear skies at night and northern winds the temperatures have significantly dropped very large shift in the weather into September. Hopefully we can get some clear days with southernly winds at the end of the month. Only reached 21.5c here today cloud for most of the day and clear skies at night not ideal. The grass has greened up but some areas the grass hasn't since it's completely dead.
