i was just at a friends who had a specimen sized planted (15' ft. CT). i've never seen one until now, mainly because i'm not a huge yucca-person. looks like a nice addition with groupings of palms + when grown higher, could be a nice palm frost protector.

Palmarazzi,

I just checked out what a "not a huge Yucca person " looks like,  mainly to see what your location was ..........  JR,  that is easily the best looking profile on this board .

Yucca filifera do not produce a canopy as such,  but are more of an "architrectural" plant.  When they grow much older they develop a chunky swollen base with numerous stems.   They can end up with many heads.  I really like them,  but I have a lot more palms growing,  mainly under dicot canopy.

If you like the Yucca look,  but want color,  the Cordyline australis red and bronze cultivars can look good,  but may not be suited to zone 8.  After many years they end up with the same massive base on them.

my buddies is fairly large, gosh i can't remember how many trunks (kills me that i didn't have my camera) but i guess i'm confusing canopy size with multi-trunk pompom heads stuck together. i'll have to go back and snap a pic.

I must admit to being ignorant.  I don't know who that young lady is, but she shold lighten up on the eye shadow and wash and comb her hair.  That being said, I wouldn't kick her out of bed for eating crackers.

I don't think Y. elephantipes is dense enough for wind screening or for canopy.  It is real pretty when in bloom with those big, white candelabra inflorescence.  The trunk is reminiscent of the Pony Tail Palm (beaucarnea?).  It is much friendlier than the locally native and very similar looking Y. aloifolia, Spanish Bayonet.

Yuccas are uncommon in Floriduh.  Those rostrata look cool but I don't know how they would fare here.

here is one of the "pups" after 10 months. (second picture hasall colors but green removed)

These plants will grow from a piece of trunk left on the ground.  Tough as.

Dont let anyone tell you Agaves and Yuccas dont like water.  Main effect is it makes them grow faster.

Moisture + good drainage = good looking yuccas

If that girl is growing palms,  she is a real myth buster.

Palmarazzi,

I know cyberspatial repartit has misled many people in the past and I would not want to mislead anyone on the IPS site,  particularly being an IPS member  held in esteem in some quarters.

Look just so we all know where we stand in this,  I too popped my photo up on my profile.
