Synechanthus fibrosus , a little discussed palm

Here are 3 Synechanthus fibrosus growing at Leu Gardens. I don't see this palm talked about much. They have grown well here but seem to be as nematode sensitive as the closely related Chamaedorea. I found a good spot with heavier, fertile soil that they have been happily growing in. It gets darker shade from a large Sausage Tree and shading from a Cycas thoursii.

Nice palms at Leu Gardens, @Eric in Orlando!

They seem to enjoy that shade.

this is the largest one here, it has 5+ft of trunk and hangs in there better than most Chamaedorea long-term (old-ish photo)

Jeff wanted to plant a big bucket of seedlings near this sometime soon

Mine are the form that have grouped leaflets and some mottling in the leaves which unfortunately was sucked out by the flash but gives a nice tropical flourish to a cool growing palm.  One of mine is also suckering which defies the botanical description.

@Eric in Orlando

Synecanthus are quite under appreciated out here in Land O’La La. Once they get a good start they’re reasonably hardy and reliable though I’ve found babies to be a bit touchy.

Very nice specimen @richnorm!

So Dave, what size is a good start here in California?  Big 1 gallon, a 5 gallon or a15 gallon size?  I know, one person's 1 gallon is another's 5 gallon, but you get the idea.  This is a species I'm quite unfamiliar with.  I don't recall seeing it in any of the gardens I've visited over the years here in Southern California.  Perhaps they just got lost in my eyes among Chamaedorea's, which the small ones resemble somewhat.
