Looking perfect Tim. Such a cool palm. Any advise for us stateside growers would be fantastic! Seems like they can handle some sun…typical planting as with any healed Dypsis, normal watering etc…?? 
 

@iDesign, @BS Man about Palms, @Gtlevine any update? Like most, I have a couple small ones from FB and I’m ok with taking risks for research and development. 😂👍

Not a lot of excitement happening over here, but my oldest one (last photo below) is starting to develop a nice heel, and has a good-looking spear.  I originally bought two and one died (one of my only Floribunda casualties to date), so I suggest buying at least two... just in case. This one is plugging along slowly, and I bought two more 4" in July (not shown) as backup plants.

Would love to see a large CA grown one. Based on internet photos alone, it's one of my very favorite palms... but mine are in the "I'll be pleasantly surprised if this grows well" category.

Dale, not much to say other than be patient. It’s always had a bit of cover in a fairly protected spot in the garden. Lots of moisture and humidity, of course, and very little fertilizer. It has always been a robust grower with deep green leaves and good trunk and petiole color. It’s getting to be a beast lurking way down in the front garden.

Stacy, hang in there. At least your hovo. has a dinosaur for protection. We have the luxury locally of obtaining large, vigorous potted specimens that are ready to jump out of their pots.

I have 1 or 2 one gal. ones that are nit overly impressive. 

Worst loss was my big 7 gal one I had destroyed by gophers years ago... 😡

Heres an update on this guy. Still putting out hooked spears and crazy twisted fronds every couple of months. Lately by the time the new frond opens there is 3-4 inches of new spear tip already in the chute.

Here’s mine in Oceanside, CA. It hasn’t been in the ground for too long that’s why I’m babying it a little with the shade cloth. Also, I cut off the top 8” of a 20gal pot I wasn’t using to create a ring to help hold all the soil/compost in place from my mount plant. I’ll remove that once the plant has sank 2-3 inches.

Pretty plant! I’ve tried a few of these over the years since it’s such a pretty palm in Hawaii. These are a very tough grow in the ground in CA. Mine has been in the ground at least 5-7yrs. It looked great the first year or two then like other plants I’ve tried struggles.

Robert, Starting to take the shape everyone loves. Can you elaborate on the details of this plant for the other SoCal peeps that have these in the ground? Sun tolerance, direction, water, medium used, fertilization requirements? Seems to be a real tough grow for everyone outside of the Islands. Such a cool plant and even the most experienced growers are struggling.

Yours looks great Nick, I remember that palm and the Cyphopheonix Alba in the ground looking nice coming out of winter when I was at your place last! 
 

Dale, I actually had a 4” Floribunda Hovo in the same spot for two winters before I found a 15gallon and swapped them out. The smaller one never looked amazing but it survived last winter and some hot spells while also pushing out 2 leafs in 18 months. That gave me the confidence to splurge on a big one.
 

I’ve used Nutricote total, lots of compost, and consistent waterings since their rootball seems so small. I think that they like a warm shady area (if that’s even possible haha).
 

I bet that they can do some sun but the problem is that the older leaves just get so damn crispy so quickly lol. It seems like 2 older leafs get roasted for every new, tougher one that opens. For that reason, I’ve got it under like 60% shade cloth because it was in a greenhouse its whole life until I bought it earlier in 2023. Hoping I can pamper it until it can hold more than 3 green leafs lol

Just out of curiosity did you plant in the ground in a 15 gallon pot?

Mine in Phoenix it is not planted yet I dug a hole and set the pot in the hole to see how it would do this picture is after our hellish summer I will plant it in spring if it survives winter it is in deep shade and gets water every day!!!

Looks nothing like Dypsis Hovomantsina to me.
