We are at 13c. No need to turn the brood lamps on, except for effect.

They are growing beautifully.

That's so you know the genesis of how I started with these palms.

In marginal areas, don't tent them.

Just place a tarp above them.

And a brood lamp goes a long way.

Since my accident I haven't thoroughly checked palm.  The newer leaves are dropping at half mast.

I think a mouse tried to get to it.

I dunno.

Now that I turned on the lamps, I see something on the left side of my baby.

Hopefully tomorrow I'll get help from one of my kids.

Holy moly.   Seems whatever tried to get to it didn't get the meristem.   Anyone know of a resin/putty to adhere to the side of a palm to cover a gap?

Seems they didn't get to the heart.

But the palm is exhibiting the effects.

The most recent leaves aren't growing upright as usual. They are bending like butias. (At half mast)   And with zigzag (another thread)  patterns on the leaflets. However, there is a spear appearing.

Help

Thanks fellas, they're doing fine. Yesterday has been the coldest day yet. 4.6c

By 10 AM we were back at 13c

The brood lamps kicked in at 8c.  So all is well.

This morning's low was 8c

I kept the Coconut I got outdoors the whole winter at my patio. If the wheater forecast is correct the next 2 weeks it looks like they will do fine. I have kept my Latania all the way outdoors this winter also. Its currently pushing out a fronds. Lets hope they thrive in Spring. That will proove that tropicals can tolerate chilly nights as long as the following day is kinda varm.

do you have a timer thermostat that switches on the lamps at 8°? i.e. timer with regulator thermometer?

Correct  with

4 (four)  125 incandescent brood lamps.

Neither the alfie or the D.plumosa require the lamps.

We had ice on our windshields a few days ago (near SDSU).  Mine seem ok but I think being partially under a papaya and against the south side of the house helps.  Next week we’re looking at some cold temps again.

I honestly don't know why we never have frost/ice here.  In late 2015 it did dip to 2.3c but no frost.

Yes! Santa Ana winds. East to west. So they are blowing towards the right in the picture today.

Are they recovering from their wounds in December? Looks like some kind of rodent damage.

Thanks Dave. I'm getting there.

Status quo regarding the rodent damage on the oldest coco. It's pushing out a new spear.

How are your coco’s doing?  Of my three it looks like two died and one is on life support.  It was too cold for too long this winter.
