Cats and indoor palms

Just got this nice caryota mitis on Friday. Never seen one around here before so I thought I'd have it.

Unfortunately, the cats like it very much too as you can see!

Does anyone have tips for keeping cats away from indoor plants?

Cheers guys :-)

Not sure if the missus will go for the prison look!

I'd love a dog though, but I can see the house being destroyed with two cats and a dog.

Hmmm …, :indifferent: instead of one dog you could keep –say– one hundred mice which the cats can »play« with , but even this would not work if your cats are vegan ………

Put a scratching post nearby. They want to exercise their claws, and you won't want to have your palms as the only thing they can do that with.

You could also put a fine green wire mesh around the trunk in the pot.

Be warned that cats LOVE grass and palms are related to and probably taste like grass to them.

I have four cats in the house and lots of palms outside.

I'm curious to see if the orange peels work too

For my cat, citruses are not a solution. He don't like its scent, but still it wont stop it from what he's doing. In my case he is rampaging behind my PC, busting cables.

Is your cat a kitten? If so, the rampage will continue, till after maturity.

5 months old. But i had to take her when she was 5 weeks old, as one of i think 3-4 kittens  from abandoned litter. So now she acts a bit like with orphan disorder. Loves to hug but is also a bit savage, chasing me, jumping on my knees and hiding under the sofa :)

Kittens all act like that! I've had a couple dozen. Well, I haven't the female cats had them. They play "sabre tooth tiger" with your toes under the covers of your bed in the morning. Then, when they're older, they stop and act adult. Or at least somewhat adult.

Here's a website to ask about cat care. I have four cats and I've found it helpful.

nice, thank you. Wish I could have space for one more cat so Lulu won't be alone :)

Remember, they're babies, though athletic ones. You can't really discipline them. What I did to keep some kittens I had out of trouble when I was away all day at work was keep them in a big "playpen" a box they couldn't climb out of with food, water, cat litter, etc.. I'd let them out when I got home.

By the time they got too big to confine, they were a lot easier to deal with. But, they still want to play with EVERYTHING.

But they're so cute! Here's one who liked to drape herself over my shoulder, like a live fur-piece.

So far they only eat 2 species. The Pygmy Date Palm, and the Cham. elegans.

Most of the others get ignored, but I still keep a spray bottle handy in case of poachers.

I'll try the orange peels thing, but so far any "pet away" sprays have worked only until they dried completely.  Then it was as good a bitter salad dressing...
