Just thought I'd raise the blood pressure of those of you who planted it out by the back fence.  Think "Phoenix canariensis"..

Just getting started. I call 'em 800 Pound Gorillas for a reason. That one's about a 500 Pounder . . . .

Think closer to Jubaea. They get to be about 4 feet across, 1.3 M.

Very nice palm!

A potted cycas hybrid fell on mine and killed it. It barely even moved the palm and it shocked and died. I am totally bummed out

I can't get a picture of the whole thing, either the trunk or the crown. It's hemmed in by other stuff.

Here's one of me, next to it. I'm no dwarf.

Very impressive plant. How old is yours?

This is one species which just loves my area even when it's all boggy and cold with gale force winds. It just isn't fazed by anything this place literally throws at it.

Oh, yes, in much the same way a Hummer is bigger than a SMartCar.

Dang that's a huge palm. I may have underestimated the space it needs in my yard. Dave, your profile says you were born in 1915. You look good for your age, haha.

This photo doesn't really do justice to how big it is in person.  DD's is a MONSTER.  I have a picture somewhere of him hugging it and his arms don't even go halfway around.

That's not Glen's plant - it's Dennis Turrin's near me in Concord.  I will post pics when I get over there some time this year...it's quite a bit bigger now.

Be warned

Tor tors are tempermental, with a capital "T" and prone to phytoptera rot.

R I P 800 pound gorilla, up the chimney.

Wow @ghar41 amazing size, how old is your specimen, was it planted small or transplanted as a large palm? How many fronds did it push out annually? Do you have any recent photos of it?
