Ho'omaluhia Botanical Garden, Oahu HI

It was about a 30-40 minute drive from Hawaii Kai, around the south tip of the island and up to the Kailua and Kaneohe area where the Ho'omaluhia Botanical Garden is.  It's a huge park that's free to enter.  You can drive through and it's got camping and a visitors center and tons of rare and exotic palms.

Hawaii-347.jpg

The entrance driveway had a whole row of huge Sabal sp. planted there.

Hawaii-348.jpg

We came across a nice Pinanga coronata clump.

Little did I know, we weren't even inside the park yet.   We'd already been there about a half an hour.  I was taking pictures and running all around.  You drive through with your car so I kept shutting it off and taking pictures.  Then we reached the actuall entrance and that's where we saw the real Pinanga coronata clumps!

I think this is an Orania sp.  It was very robust and had beautiful thick pendant leaflets w/ a silver hint on the backside.  Any I.D. guesses.

Here's one of it's seeds!  They were huge!

This is one of my new favorite palms.  It was labled Pinanga copelandii.  There's another newer name for it now but I can't remember it.  Those pinangas are great.

This was labled Orania lauderbachiana.  I've got an eye for those Oranias now.  Not cultivated much.  Maybe I'll find one for SoCal yet....

Your first unknown orania is orania palindan.  there is one at Foster's too.  Its a gorgeous orania from the phillippines and supposedly cold tolerant.

That's one rare washingtonia you found!! :) :)

This has my vote!  I hope you don't mind, but I made it my desk top here at work. Just beautiful!

The base on that Dypsis lastelliana is real exotic looking.

And the "Looking up into the spiraling Corypha" photo - the lighting is very ethereal. Awesome Matt. I knew you'd have some real prize winning photos. Thanks for sharing, Keep it comin'! :D

Thanks Guys.  Kris, I was just joking about the Mexican Fan Palm.  It's a Lodociea maldivica - the double coconut....sorry for the confusion...I was just trying to be funny.....

Bob, you can't bring back any seeds because you have to go through multiple agricultural checks at each airport where they make you throw away any plant material including any fruit you brought to munch on.

Matty,

The Kentiopsis picture in post #8 is fantastic, it looks like photo contest material to me, but of course I did not vote for the winner last time. All nice pics to me though since all the palms here have to be kept in cages.
