My wife and I bought and investment property almost 3 years ago in Vista California. My wife doesn't understand the palm disease like most of my friends so I needed a place to plant a garden where I can grow bigger stuff. I've been officially working in the garden for about 6 months. It's been a very slow project but its finally starting to pay off. I recently started planting palms on the south facing slope in a good micro climate. I've wanted to do this for some time now and I have finally made it a reality. The garden is located on 3 acres and was covered in very old stressed out Avocado trees that were neglected by the former property owner. It took several months-1 year to cut and remove all the trees and stumps. A total labor of love for sure. Now that I have all those avo's cut down the garden is a blank canvas ready to be created. The soil is dreamy.....Its has a 2 foot clay silt cap followed by pure DG and is easy to dig with a sharp shovel. My end goal is to just create a tropical oasis that will bring me joy and have a cool place to enjoy a Mai Tai. :)

I recently trenched and now have all the hard pie for the irrigation laid in place (that took much longer than planned) with the help of a very good palm buddy.

Man those spots looked like prime spots for some Phoenix Robelienii’s,  or the ever Popular Sago Palms!  Home Depot running a Special on them! Lol.    Nice choice!

Nice!  And I was just noticing that this PalmTalk thread is now a good thirty pages long. Wow!  Josh, you garden has sparked a lot of interest, having gradually turned into the ultimate palm museum.

Crazy that this thread has gone this far. It's fun to get back into planting again and has been a good source of stress relief. I've been super busy building up the nursery and have neglected the fun part of my business. Thanks for your kind words and I hope to post more updated and new planting pictures this summer.

My trick is to grow my future garden plants as big as possible in the greenhouse before planting them in the garden.  This gives me a huge advantage to get a small plant big quick.

the goal is to grow up a well established 5 &15 gallon plants before they are  planted outside in the garden. This will greatly increase the chances for better acclimation with a more robust root system. I will have more pictures  coming soon on what I will be planting in the garden this spring. Lots of dypsis and new-cal plants are  my main drivers but I also understand diversity is the key.

Here are a few sneak peeks on what I have growing to plant in the display garden this year and years to come.Its going to be a very busy planting season for us and I'm excited to start posting again on this thread.

That one's really beautiful!  I have a "Joe Hoak" Desmettiana and a "Ray of Light" Attenuata, and this one looks a lot like the Joe Hoak but with the size and fast growing of the Attenuata.  Where did you find that one?  Sell me an offset!!!  :D

Thanks, This particular clone came from a collector friend of mine a few years ago. This is a really nice clone of varigated attenuata for sure. I have a few more that are going to get planted in a few weeks. I will have some off sets ready in the near future. Already sold most of them locally for a good penny ;)

I just saw this post (30 pages?!) for the first time yesterday!  I'm speechless.  I guess I should have stayed in SoCal an extra couple of days back at Christmas time when I was out there to get the tour, but I didn't know what I was missing!  I guess I'll have to make another trip out there this year.  Great work!

I'll be back at it next week. it looks like the rain is finally slowing down. It has been challenging to work in the garden with everything always being so wet and not drying out.

Josh, this is absolutely incredible. I am so envious. I used to to go to your house and buy palms from you anytime I visited my brothers family in Carlsbad. I haven’t been down there in awhile but next time you have got to let me visit your new garden/nursery.

You are doing what most of us just dream about doing.  Very well done.

with all this raid I'm expecting some great growth this year. the weather is gonna be in the mid 70's soon. Birds are already building nests in the palm trees.....
