I'm officially back at it...! After taking a much needed break I'm now in full planting mode. Here are some palms I planted today.

Its hard to believe but this was only a 1 gal a year ago. That's some fast growth indeed

I wanted to plant this species out as a big 1 gal. I wanted to watch this guy grow over the years rather that planting out a big one.

Crazy growth on that thing!  I've had mine for years and it's half the size of the one you just planted!

I had it in the green house. I'm sure this had a lot to do with it.

The one at my Carlsbad garden is half the size and twice as old.

I might have got lucky with some really good genetics on this guy?

Josh, I'm confused by the name. "Affinis" is a botanical term denoting 'close to' or 'nearly like'.

I'm not sure who won? the Mule palm or me.....

since I let this palm root in the ground for 2 yrs since it was a wee 6' tall skinny 24" box due to not knowing where I wanted to plant it. Ok, it was laziness.

I decided to tackle the beast today. It took 3 guys to load it up in my truck and then drive it to the end of my property where my garden is. the trunk is as big as a basket ball and weighed several hundred pounds for sure!! I decided to use it as a canopy tree seeing how damn fast it has grown in only 2 yrs time. maybe someday soon I will plant a cute New-Cal or dypsis in its shadows?

got lucky and scored yet another massive Ravenea X for the fairview garden. Not sure how this one will fair since all the dirt fell off the roots. It was growing in pure sand. I dug it out last Friday. I did manage to get a very good cauterization on the cut roots. That should give it a fighting chance I hope...?

Josh, that mule is huuuuuuuge. Hopefully, it will grow a six foot trunk for you soon.

I just noticed that there are some canopy trees in the background, including you February 13 photos.  Are those the famous Acacea Dealbata? What do you think of them as canopy trees?

so far I'm a big fan of them. They ahve a lot of color and character IMO.  Mine are still small and have only reached heights of 10-20' tall and some have not branched out yet. I'm hoping for a good spread and look forward to their first bloom.

No, I was thinking about growing Acacia Dealbata for "instant" canopy, but I hesitated when I heard about their aggressive reputation. Apparently they haven't "taken over" at your place, which is good news.

gotcha, I now have 6 acacia dealbada  planted at the garden. Its a fun tree to watch grow since they grow so darn fast.

I checked out the mule palm this morning and I don['t think it knew half of its roots were cut out when we popped the box from the ground.

its a fast grower unlike the robusta type. I have both in my green house and theses are clearly different than dypsis Robusta. I hope it becomes a monster someday soon

pretty cool hybrid. I'm curious if this will come out as a good cross or just look like one of the parents???

If anyone is growing this please post some pics. I would love to see what this will look like down the road.

Cool new additions Josh. 

I think I might have a Pembana x Lanceolata cross. Bought it as a seedling from Kevin weaver a couple years ago. It was labeled Pembana and was with several flats of Pembana seedlings. But this one stood out to me, was twice as big as the rest and a cool orange coloring. Now I know that Dypsis can vary in color and doesn't mean they will keep the color or be a hybrid. But this one just looked different from the rest. Here's a picture below. Not the best lighting. You can see the Lanceolata leaflets though. I'm curious what this grows up to be. It's fast though that's for sure!

Quite a project...looks great...I tend to go for instant gratification too...too bad you didn't bury the power lines before you began; but ultimately the palms will edit them out.

Wow! I cannot remember a thread that I have enjoyed more than this one! Thank you so much for sharing the design and implementation of this spectacular garden. This garden shows that if you take the time and effort to plan it out ahead of time the results can be amazing (and they are)!

I wish I would have put this in the ground sooner but I did not know where I wanted to plant this out until a couple weeks ago.

yours look amazing!!! from what I understand there were a few that floated around 2 years ago from a backyard Hawaii grower. That's where mine came from. It was an intentional cross and when they came up I jumped on them super quick.

Tom, I'm super glad to hear this!!

This had been a very slow planed out garden from the beginning. I didn't want to impulse plant anything and take my time with my design.
