I have been really busy with the green house project and finally had time to plant some palms this week. I decided to plant this 45 gal copernicia fallense yesterday. I already have a really nice 15 gal in the ground but wanted to ad another one to the collection. This is one of those palms you cant have to many of in your garden IMO :)

first I had to pick the perfect spot to plant this rare beauty. I decided to have the hole dug at an intersection in the pathway system.

I had a decent one also.... THEN I figured out unlike many palms that slow down their water needs in the winter here, decent sized ones need WATER year round! Yup, mine dried out... :( It was where the eckmanii now resides.

Zone 10a at best after 2007 AND 2013, on SW facing hill, 1 1/2 miles from coast in Oceanside, CA. 30-98 degrees, and 45-80deg. about 95% of the time.

I do some experiments and learning in my garden with palms so you don't have to experience the pain! Look at my old threads to find various observations and tips!

I wonder if that's true for all Copernicia out here?

Every Copernicia I have met loves water.  The natural habitat of Copernicia fallaensis floods seasonally.  They are happy to have their feet wet.

That location is outside a small town in north central Cuba named Falla.  Hence the name of the species is fallaensis.  But I have seen it spelled fallense in various places.  

Does anyone know why two different spellings have evolved?

Hooooly cow!  That is a MAJOR undertaking.  Wow -- well, you only live once, man!

Josh, that is one HUGE Everglades Palm.  I love how you can see it poking up from all directions.  Those must be pretty rare in California!  (native over here) 

Since they're not supposed to be especially fast-growing, it's a good thing you bought a massive one.  You just saved yourself a decade or two of waiting for it to grow.

At this point in the thread, I must say that I have never seen such a diverse private collection of palms.  ....and you're just getting started!

one this size in california is impossible to find. I have been looking for a very looooooooooooooooooooooooong time. I had to buy this from an old lady who planted it as a 15 gal 50 yrs ago 2 hours north (by crane truck) of the Vista garden in orange county.

 

my goal is to have a little of everything in the garden. I feel real blessed to be able to start a garden of this magnitude with big rare palms.

MAN what a day!! Josh gave me a great day long tour/hang out/ PRA. Cool beans place in spades!!! Josh has done his homework and I can join the camp of the truly impressed... Not to mention some pigs fly BBQ after.. Drool followed by drool!! Well done Dr. J. !! B)

Thanks for stopping by Bill. This PRA was a long time in the making and way overdue :) 

It was fun to hear you talk about some of these bigger dypsis I have dug and craned into the garden. A great day indeed!!

Oh yeah, the bbq afterwards was drool worthy..

it was growing next to the driveway and eventual had grown over the cement in the course of 50 yrs. if you notice several main stalks were cut off in the process to get it out of the hole. This dig took 4 days to accomplish and almost never made it to the garden.

On the other side of the root ball not picture is the kitchen sink..lol
