Welcome to the board Sean! It's possible in the right microclimate to grow a royal evsen up here in the SF Bay Area. I have three in my garden. There are lots of big ones in Southern CA.

Jim in Los Altos:

Yes Microclimate makes all the difference. Check out these royals here in Jacksonville , Fl. where we generally can't grow royals (North Florida) due to some freezing temps. They've been in the ground approximately 15 years at a house near the water on the south side of town.

Wow! This certainly gives credence to Bartram finding them growing wild around Lake Dexter.

There's a rockin' bunch of Royals near South Coast Plaza, in Costa Mesa

DoomsDave;

I checked out the Royals at the plaza on Google Street View. Wow!! Looks like a Miami, Fl. street scene. Palms very healthy looking. Maybe these will encourage more plantings in So. Cal. area.

You have, of course, a standing invitation to visit my palm garden including the royals whenever you're out here.

Keith did it, and he's none the worse for the excitement . . .

DoomsDave:

That invitation is tempting. Maybe my big chance will come one day soon, as I have yet to visit California at all. Tell me, do you know of any other Roystonea species (oleracea, venezuelana) growing in So. Cal.; if so, where?

I have R. oleracea, princeps, and borenquenia

I don't doubt he saw royal palms in that area. Water really makes a good microclimate, giving palms a chance to flourish where they are not expected to. A few years ago a group of folks from one of the palm societies supposedly planted some royals in the Lake Dexter area. Have you or anyone else heard of this effort and how the palms fared?

No doubt Johnny and June bought some "warmth" to parts of Jacksonville all those years ago and it "stayed" ? :) Pete

Here's the biggest Royal I've seen in So-cal, or maybe neck and neck with the Hoopers'.

Thar 'tis on the left, towering above all. I'd say an easy 70 feet.

I wouldn't want to be driving underneath when a leaf gets jettisoned!

The streets are so wide in Florida that there is pretty much no chance for that :)

If they seem small, its just that the palms and cars are huge!

DoomsDave:

What a nice royal . I'm in N. Florida where we're challenged when it comes to growing the royals and other tropical palms. Did you do much protecting of this palm over the years? What's the lowest temps it's seen./ howfam

Butch saw four successive nights of 24.5 F back in January of 2007. It was about eight feet tall then, more or less. It saw one day of 25 F in January of 2013.

Once past baby stages, it was much too big to protect against the cold.

So this must mean Roystonea has incredible drought tolerance to do that well in Southern California?

Since i couldn't find where i'd discussed it last, Looks like Google did an update of the street the Lonesome Royal back home in my old neighborhood in San Jose.  House STILL appears un-occupied ( at least when the photo was taken )..

Figured i'd post for everyone in the Bay Area ( and elsewhere ) wondering how it has fared. Image is from March of last year. Not the best looking of the CA specimens, not too shabby either..
