Like clockwork our downslope breeze has kicked in and our temp is holding steady as all the lower elevations continue to drop. This place is magic I tell you, magic.

Reporting in from Point Loma, San Diego.... Odd. Just after 7 PM it was 40F in my screened porch; now 45F at 11:30 PM. I normally wouldn't be up this late to check but people next door are outdoors screaming for some reason. :mrlooney: I want to go back to... :asleep:

snort?!

Wha?

Oh, yeah.

Checked the thermo, and it was 41 F.

Anticlimactic? Sure. Boring? No. Dodging bullets never gets dull.

And, the night is still only half-over.

Happy New Year, all!

Not that lucky here. Hard ice on all the car windshields, though it's warming right up. It does not look like this will be a repeat of 2007 though. Takes a few days for damage to show, but things seen ok.

i've been completely out of it the last couple of months but saw the weather report talking about how cold it was expected to be and hopped onto palmtalk. checked a couple of weather stations near me and looks like there wasn't anything lower than 36.5°F with most being a bit higher in the 37-38 range. outside was clear and sunny at 8am but was pretty chilly with a bit of wind chill. cars are completely clear of any frost but don't know what it looked like an hour earlier, will check the garden later since i had just gotten some more bromeliads from hawaii yesterday and had potted them up on arrival.

So far, not so bad. The canaries in the Cold Mine are still twittering happily. (Veitchia arecina okay.)

We hit about 40. Whew!

Till tonight . . . .

did my walk around and only real cold damage was done to my Veitchia arecina and Wodyetia that are right next to each other out in the open and are starting to spot. the Veitchia had some spots already which could still be some sun burn so it's real hard to tell since they're both in full all day sun year around. they're at least in spots where the sun hits it first thing in the morning when the sun starts to show

Got down to 28.4 in here in Riverside.... but it must not have been there too long as I don't see any damage today.... Dammaropsis leaves, banana leaves, plumeria leaves all look un damaged. Much warmer than 2007...

How's it looking for everyone tonight? My local forecast is only predicting about 2°f warmer than last night. I'may not feeling particularly optimistic. You?

Forecast for me is low of 36. Only 1 degree warmer than last night. I am looking forward to getting this cold over with...December was a bad palm growing month, especially since my low temp prior to December was 57...

I'm showing 33, which is also one better than last night...assuming it holds. I hope it does - today is about 5 degrees cooler than yesterday.

Why Pete? I can't find any forecast from any outlet that says anything but warmer temps. Friday night in northern or southern CA.

my forecast was briefly showing a low of 34 for Friday night (when I posted) but then soon revised it back up. The forecasts can bounce up and down pretty quickly. Right now they're forecasting 37 for Friday night for me but I wouldn't be shocked if it goes up or down. There simply hasn't been anything pushing this damn cold air out...

the forecasts long and short term are simply not accurate enough, given how important a few degrees of cold can make a huge difference for us.... Before all this cold weather started, they had forecast for San Diego at least 7 days of 70 plus degree weather with lows in the high 40s. All of a sudden that changed to 2 days of warm weather followed by what we have now....

Forecasts got it wrong here too. Lowest forecast for the area was 33 going into last night. Some low elevations will be almost 10 degrees below that.

Yeah but the good news is that the subtropical jet is weakening, patterns are changing and I don't see any possible cold coming for at least a couple weeks. Hopefully Spring is here :)
