Variegated Travelers Palm, Ravenala madagascariensis 'variegata'

SurfCityPalms

Recommended Posts

EXTREMELY RARE Variegated Travelers Palm. The tree is currently in a 5 gallon pot and stands about 4 feet tall.

I have been collecting variegated palms for years and this is the only variegated Ravenala madagascariensis I have ever seen. This is a great collection piece and has white/cream variegation on every leaf. The variegation continues down the stem of its leaves which also open variegated (the variegation does not need to fade in).

The tree has been in my personal collection but I unfortunately need to sell off a few plants to pay for some home repairs, which is the only reason I am considering selling it.

Pricing this tree is tough due to it's "one in a billion" (or more) rarity so I am accepting offers. All reasonable offers will be replied to (a couple hundred dollars is not reasonable offer).

I am in Southern California and am willing to ship anywhere.

PM me or email me directly (directly may get a faster response but ill try to be quick with PMs)

That is amazing! Definitely a rare gem. Someone snatch it up, as these are seldomly seen available.

Thanks for sharing/offering Jerod!

Well, here is an update/bump to this thread.

I ended up acquiring this beautiful plant from Jerod back in late 2014.  Being a HUGE variegated plant lover/collector, this was a must have.

I had just moved into a new home about 12 months earlier here in Santa Barbara,  and knew that this one needed some special care. It was SO rare.  I ended up growing it to about 5’ tall in the 5g pot, in my newly built greenhouse!

Unfortunately, it started to loose its variegation! I was saddened at the time, but it was still a healthy nice plant.  A thought popped into my head “don’t throw it away because it’s turning green, just plant it.  This was variegated, and travelers palms send out new pups, so there is a very small chance, the variegation may return one day.  JUST PLANT IT!”  And so I did.

I planted it I full sun, straight from the greenhouse.  Thought it would burn, but it didn’t. Thought it may die, as Santa Barbara is borderline zone pushing for this plant.  But hey, what the heck.

Ok so here is the update, some 7 years later!  It is flowering for the first time, and the new pup is growing strong, and even better than the original plant!

That's a special plant!  I would consider separating the pup from the parent plant so it can stand out even more.  I would expect all future pups from that pup to be equally as spectacular also...and have you seen the current market for some variegated plants?

Mod, feel free to relocate this to another page if needed

OK, so just about 10yrs from when I worked out a deal with Jerod for this 1g.

Its planted in ‘not so good’ soil (clay ish) here in Santa Barbara,CA about 3 miles from the coast.   5’ of wood trunk.  I’m honestly surprised it has survived this long.  I’ve only seen a small handful growing this in SB.  However the variegated pup is awesome, though a little tattered from the most recent heat wave.  Enjoy

WOW! I am a huge fan of variegated plants, let alone zone pushed travelers palm!!! Thank you for sharing. I hope to get a travelers palm big enough to plant out here in Oakland one day (I know its a big zone push but I have a pretty sweet microclimate). Hope to see more updates and pups!

That's REALLY cool! I missed seeing this way back. Glad it made you an even better offspring!!

I stumbled on a "cousin" as such years back I grabbed at a Home Depot. I was walking through a garden area and spotted a bird of paradise that had some variegation. It's still alive and one area continues to push out variegation.

Zone 10a at best after 2007 AND 2013, on SW facing hill, 1 1/2 miles from coast in Oceanside, CA. 30-98 degrees, and 45-80deg. about 95% of the time.

I do some experiments and learning in my garden with palms so you don't have to experience the pain! Look at my old threads to find various observations and tips!
