7:45am 34°f (which was also the low) out in the open. 20 feet closer to the house it is 40°f. Either got a faulty sensor or the stucco really does hold heat.

It feels COLD no matter what the thermometer says. Just visually inspected the entire property. Dodged a bullet, no frost on anything. However, the hill (city property) behind me that slopes into my yard not down/away from my yard had frost all over it. Lots of damage to the low lying vines on that hill.

Wonder why the hill got hit but not me? All the concrete and the pool maybe? Whatever the reason, I'll take it....for today anyway.

It was 40 F up against the house as well for me. Out in the open the reading was 37 F.

Frost on roof tops but nothing lower for me. Lets see what tonight brings.

only brought four potted plants into the house so far:

cycas debaoensis

two Z. nuerophyllidia

microcycas calcoma (yes bill...i still have it and it looks like hell) B)

inside the greenhouse w/ oil heater and fan it is a toasty 49F at 10pm...guarantee tonight it hits below 40 in there even with the heater....seen this movie before...

ready for major carnage with regards to the palms in the ground over the next few nites at my dad's in vista....

not worried about the encephalartos really....they all should be okay over the next few nites....we shall see!

It's 2am, currently 30 out in the front yard. 43 in the areas around my propane heaters. 47 in my little greenhouse with a small electric heater going. Anything not in the range of the patio heaters is definitely being put to the test over the next few nights!!! I imagine I will see a low of 27-28 tonight.

What kind of gauge are you using to measure that? And where is the sensor?

accurite weather station...i set the station itself 3 feet outside my front door on the concrete at ground level (what would normally be recorded as the "inside" temp)...outside sensor was place in the greenhouse..

intellicast "detailed observation for the last 48 hours" recorded temps confirms a low of 38F in san marcos at 6:53AM this morning, so i think the station was pretty accurate.

Burt thats to close to your house for an accurate reading. With a slight breeze I can pick up the heat form the house on the down breeze side of the house up to 5f. warmer!

Slight frost on roofs here...

I don't get it. If Steve and I got to basically the same temp why did he freeze and I didn't? I woke up and there was no wind. Can the cold air/frost drain without wind?

yeah...i'm sure out in the wide open it was a little colder randy, but not by much....i don't think the sensor on the concrete at ground level on the upside of the wind is going to pick up that much radiated heat from the house (given that heat rises)....

weather station at the college 1/2 mile from my house confirms my recorded temps, even with my station 3 feet from my front door:

I just got back from checking the bottom of our property which is about 200' lower then the nursery and it has been below freezing for close to ten hours.

There are only hardy palms & cycads down there.

Happy growing,

im thinking its because i had all that rain. all that rain froze. ive lived in santee for 32 years. never remember anything like that before. if i dont have major damage after this whole thing is over ill be shocked.

Man, you must me in a great spot. I've always noticed that San Marcos is 5 degrees warmer and colder than me usually. The college is on a hill though. Do you know your elevation? are you higher than the college? You can see one of my sensors in my avatar.

Strange you got rain last nite, it was clear here in Bonsall Vista.

they had a lotta cloud cover around san diego proper last nite bob...i was driving to my gig at the belly up tavern last nite around 5pm and saw all the clouds down south....kinda glad they didn't make their way up here last nite given the rain and hail they got down there!

A friend of mine just texted me a photo of his frozen over birdbath in San Clemente, he had a low of 28f! Another friend in Newport Beach had 32f. Could this be the end of the world famous cali coco?

Bottom dropped out at 25F for 2.5 hours, total freezing last night 16hrs (thats if it goes above 32F by 10am) Lowest humidity last night 92%, lots of sunshine ahead for the next 10 days so that means the winter foliage will gets come awesome bright colors coming on very soon. This is one degree colder than last year. Two more cold nights before going back up.

This year the W. robusta is loving the Blue / fuchsia coat it got for christmas.
