We have been busy removing a bamboo that was a little too aggressive for its space (Bambusa rigida) and planting the new area with palms, crotons, and bromeliads. First, the removal process...first I ringed the bamboo. Shortly after that, surprisingly, the whole thing turned brown. Then I began cutting out the canes.

Then my BF started removing the rootball in large chunks. Afterward he backfilled the 5' hole and topped it with compost.

Hey, I thought you LIKED bamboo. :o:rolleyes: But a Satakentia, well, those are special. B) And I love all the bromeliads, they look great.

Pardon my ignorance, but what is an Albang? I'm assuming it's the little palm with the tall trunk just behind it...?

That's quite a nice garden in the background -- can you show us more? :)

Looking good. My albangs are still in pots. Mike Evans had them, I believe they are a Archontophoenix cunninghamiana x. ?? cross. Do you remember Gina? Maybe Mike will chime in.

Yes, Albang is Alexander x Bangalow..which are both Archontophoenix.. :)

Right on Pedro. These Albangs are F3 though, so they seem to take on more of the cunninghamiana characteristics. Great looking upgrade Gina, the garden is looking great!

Yes the poor Albang stayed in the pot way too long but I was waiting for this spot to be available (and have the energy to do it all). I do love the bamboos immensely but have planted 40 varieties on my half acre and have spent the last 2 years removing mistakes and lessons learned. Some "clumpers" still are quite aggressive and will pop up a foot away from the last culm...not acceptable. But my motto is "you can never have too many palms" so that's what I'm replacing them with! (Seeing Jerry & Cindy's place just reinforced that belief!) Broms are the perfect complement. I just wish I could remember all their names.
