Boy, you Floridians have a warped perspective on what winter really is.

As of 1015AM......This should remedy our disillusions :D  The last of the warm air looks about ready to be pushed out of SE FL.

Larry,

I hope that DOGHOUSE is heated! :D

At least the NWS doesn't have those pretty little BLUE circles surrounding Florida, as of YET! ???

If they do miss it by 4 or 5  degrees tonight it could be real interesting. At least the wind is supposed to stay up a little ,which might prevent frost if it gets in the mid 30's.

What did HAPP  do with  EL NINO when we need it?

GOES satellites, GLF models, FLG models, air plane models, troughs,ENSO's, high pressure ,low pressure, artic air masses, southern jet streams,  northern jet stream, sargaso sea  jet stream, polar high plunging, cold air advection, retrograding west, east north south, blocking high, blocking low, plume of mositure.

If flip flopping makes Ray dizzy ,then all this makes me even dizzier! :D

I'm going to take TIKITIKI's lead and say tell when when it gets cold enough to bring out the heaters and blankets.

Larry,

Unfortunately the wunderground just dropped you another 2 degrees to a low of 36. :(

But before they even dropped the forecast low ,they had an advisory from NOAA . My question is why would they put out this advisory and not forecast freezing temperatures? ???

Statement as of 5:25 AM EST on January 25, 2007

... Much colder and drier air to move into west central and southwest Florida

tonight and Friday...

A developing area of low pressure over the south central Gulf early

this morning will move east across the southern peninsula later today

and into the western Atlantic tonight and Friday. A cold front trailing

from this low will sweep across the region later today as cold high

pressure builds in from the northwest. An increasing northerly wind

flow in the wake of the front will usher in a much colder and drier

air mass which will result in some near freezing temperatures over

interior sections of the Nature Coast by early Friday morning... with

lows falling into the lower and middle 40s across the remainder of

west central and southwest Florida.

In addition to the cold temperatures winds around 10 mph may support

some low wind chill values early Friday morning. Residents needing to

be outdoors overnight into early Friday morning should dress in layers

to protect themselves from the cold.

Although a long duration of freezing temperatures is not expected at

this time some damage to temperature sensitive plants will be possible

in the coldest location over the Nature Coast as well as interior sections

of west central Florida early Friday morning. Residents should plan

to cover or bring indoor any sensitive plants early this evening to

protect them from the cold. Pets should also be brought indoors as

well.

Stay tuned to NOAA Weather Radio or your local media for further

updates on the developing cold weather expected tonight and Friday.

Larry,

I just learned something about WU.

If I type in my zip (34689) I get a forecast of 37F.  If I type in Tarpon Springs, I get 36F and also a default station that is not near me (and I believe is in 34688, which is the NE corner of Pinellas).

The proper way to access the Tarpon Springs weather is by typing in 34689....as that way my weather station's data comes up :D

In any case, the WU forecasts are 90% of the time junk, so I dont give them much weight.  I watch NWS more closely as they hit it more than the others do.  For tonight, NWS and WU are pretty close (38 and 37F respectively).  So, maybe we have something here :D

Weather.com is still clinging to a 44F forecast which will likely prove too high.  They sometimes confuse 34689 with 33701 :D

This year, weather-dot-com has nailed it every time, with NWS forcasting at least 5 to 7 degrees F lower than what we end up getting.  I don't know if they're erring on the safe side or what.  I hope this trend continues.

I usually keep an eye on all the forcasts and prepare for the lowest (usually NOAA/NWS).

Disclamer!!  I'm not a big fan of weather-dot-com, it is just this year they've been the most accurate.

Gainesville tonight:

Weather-DOT-com Thurs-low = 35 F

Weather-DOT-com Fri-low = 36

Weather-DOT-com Mon-low = 33

NOAA/NWS-JAX Thurs-low = 30

NOAA/NWS-JAX Fri-low = 30

NOAA/NWS-JAX Mon-low = 28

Weatheruderground Thurs-low = 30

Weatheruderground Fri-low = 30

Weatheruderground Mon-low = "Upper twenties"

I suspect that the variances are based on exactly where one sits relative to the forecast point.  So, one has to look at all of the forecasts, and over time, see if a trend develops related to one's own temperatures and those that were forecast.

The temp has actually risen here in the past hour or two as the dewpoints have snuck up a little bit.

But, the dewpoint rise seems to be leveling off, and I have noticed this many times portends a forhtcoming temp drop.

However, winds have picked back up as well (which is usually good for my yard as I can steal some coastal heat).

Currently 54.3F at 943PM....well see what happens from now till bedtime (which will be soon for this old (but fairly young) coot.

34 F at my house and what NOAA reported at the airport.  Weatherdotcom was the closest again.  I hope their forcast for the next 10 days holds up.

Also, as far as getting adventurous and pushing zones, they just planted a coconut on the University of Florida campus.  About 6ft of trunk.  Unless this is some sort of genetically engineered "super" plant, I give it a year (this is generous, as it is probably dead already.  I'll check this weekend).
