Gonzer
George Coleman a weatherman??? That couldn't predict darkness! He called for 3°-5° degrees warmer this morning and lo and behold what do I see upon waking at 2:00 am? 31.3°! That guy seriously needs to book a room for an extended stay at Bellvue. P.S. MattyB
Carl, My temps from yesterday and today reflect your observations as well. Yesterday I was 43.7f under canopy, 42.3f out in the open Today I was 43.9f under canopy, 41.0f out in the open. So, the air temp under canopy was the same or slightly warmer today, but because the air was drier, my out in the open temps dropped lower due to more radiative heat loss to space. The drier the air gets the farther and farther apart my canopy and out in the open temps diverge. Conversely, on a humid night they will read the same. I did observe some patchy frost down in the lower parts of my property today. It only occured where the native grass had been stepped on and flattened out, making it horizontal with the sky. Any unflattened grass had no frost. Similar to frost on car hoods and windshields when the air temps are well above 32f. MattyB
It looks like tonight will be the coldest night of this whole event. With the wind advisory expiring at 4pm and the dry air still aloft, this should make for a very still, cold night, with more widespread frost. Widespread frost advisories aren't issued yet but they are expected to be from what I've been reading. The inland valleys will see frost for sure though, so you guys along the 76 corridor up in North County, Sansteevetoad, ya know, cover 'em up. Gonzer
Just got in from work, official low of 29.5° and I'm pretty stoked. Aside from the usual tipping on the Cherimoyas and bananas all's well. The Chambyronia (1' trunk) took a good hit as it's canopy was cut down early this year and it had to fend for itself. Most unusual is that my pasilla chiles are fine, I expected worse. Stay tuned to this channel for your complete freeze updates , next report at 4:00 am tomorrow. MattyB
Gonzer, I think you need to check your temperature sensors because if you hit 29.5F your bananas should be completely fried, every last leaf. Unless you're growing your bananas under canopy... On these crazy dry cold nights you cannot have a sensor that directly "sees" the sky or you will get a false low. Sutter Bob
Whoa. What's going on down there? It sounds like the cold snaps so far this winter have been worse in San Diego than way up here (although we probably will hit 28 tomorrow AM for our first serious frost of the season).
