That's a surprise, Alberto. I thought C himalayana would cope better in freezing temperatures. Do you also grow C ochlandra?

I saw many Caryota on a recent trip to Nepal and Tibet. Here's a very nice one in Kathmandu:

Caryota gigas is going to be invasive in Australia??? Well they need a wet climate, and most of Australia is very dry!

I have a trunking ochlandra, a good-sized himalayana...and a gigas that will take over Australia if I let it loose! Will take a new pic of them later.

I´d like to see them!!

I planted a lovely gigas a few years ago, but when I went to mt coot-tha botantic gardens and saw a fully grown one, I couldnt get home to dig it out quickly enough. I have a mitis that only grows in spasmodic spurts, a urens that has sat there and done nothing for 3 years and a couple of small ochlandras that grow steadily but fry if any sun gets on them. Miccles has a glorious himalayana in his garden in Melbourne that I would kill for. I tried zebrina and ophiopelis also but they didnt like my cold winter nights. However, there is a success story, all is not lost. Monostachya laughs at the heat, cold, flood and famine and always looks pretty. However its a small growing species that unfortunately clumps and my hatred of small clumpers is legendary.

Alberto, i got this one which has handled snow and -3°C. I think the bamboo made a good protection in your case, but the 2 burned leaves specimen will probably regrow with high temperature.

Here the winter of 2010 bottomed out at -4C(25F) and my C. maxima 'himalaya' looked pretty much like yours. They came back strong, though the first frond came out dwarfed on one of them. This last winter I put a heating cable on the trunk when again tempatures dropped to -4C. Again the leaves were fried but the fronds are coming out healthy and full sized. One himalaya I didn't protect is dead and next to it is a C. 'solitaire' that shows no damage. I also have a small C. ochlandra that doesn't show any winter damage and a C. obtusa (gigas) with minor leaf burn but growing strong.

The leaves weren't all burned but only 50%. In spring it took long time to make knew leaves. Now it has totally recovered.

Well Caryota gigas are awesome palms anyway! I saw them just outside Cherrapunjee on the way to a famous big waterfall there, wich is a tourist spot by the way. To get there you pass by the C. gigas at the northside from the road. Very thick trunks and huge leaves. Well Cherrapunjee is the wettest place on earth, about 12 meter of rain a year.
