Yes, this is an hour-by-hour watch/wait of dread.

Steve

Good luck, bro but those temps already at this time of night [1830] spells bad news  :(

48F current temp.  Today was 30 degrees colder than just 3 days ago.  A shock to the system that will likely result in damage even if the temp stays above 40F tonight.

Wind may be our salvation, but dew points/relative humidty are desiccating.  Afraid of watering but risk moisture deprivation  :o   Any advice?

We actually had a breeze pick up in the last hour, and some cloud cover, raised the temp from 35F to 40F @ 2200

December already saw 31, 32, 32, and plenty of nights below 40, like to catch a break the next few nights.

It's already 35F in Granada Hills, potted stuff is pulled under overhangs, but nothing is really covered. I'm deciding still weather to put some covers over stuff. I'm at work right now, but when I get home, I'll have to see what the situation is like in person.

According to the weather station two blocks away from the house, winds are averaging 15MPH - 20. So I'm hoping that'll help stuff out.

I have roof damage from high winds a couple of weeks ago, and it tore my cable line. The cable company can't repair it until the roof is repaired. So when I leave work in a few, I'll be forumless for a couple of days. So good luck everybody, hope we're all okay on Monday.

2:00AM temps remain above 40F as far north as parts of the Bay Area with even some inland valleys [ie Concord] in the 40's due to wind.

Wind has moved in over many parts of the state & is mixing the cold air.  Those who are seeing rises are likely in wind or near enough to it to benefit.  Even if the wind drops off/dies soon it has significantly undercut the arctic air mass; at least until Sunday morning.  That bone-dry desiccating off shore wind does a number on palms/plants, as we know, but nothing compared to the damage a frost brings.

Yes, Larry, that would probably be the closest.  The terrain around here is so variable that even a few blocks can gain one a different temperature.  Yet as I've indicated before, I tend to get the same readings all over my lot.

A couple miles away, Patrick in Oakley has probably come up with very different temps.

It only got to 41 here in La Mesa (12:36); woke up to some very nice cloud cover, breeze, and 45 at 6 AM.  Wrapped my bottles in christmas lights and then blankets, stayed warm and toasty all night.

Well, since the forecast tonite is for colder. I moved most of my expensive palms inside. The others are covered by sheets, or shadecloth with light. When I started at 5PM, it was very still, as I was finishing around 6:15 I noted the breezes kicking up.  I also sprayed all my foliage down today as the Sun was out, around 1 PM.  Heres hoping and praying..  :D

I have only noticed one degree of cold protection for 70% shade cloth with frost able to form under it.  You might need to suppliment more.  Hope this helps your protection strategy.
