PalmatierMeg
I have a 3g Cyphophoenix nucele & 2g Cyphophoenix elegans. Can they tolerate summer sun in S FL at this size or do they need shade? Moose
I have a 3g Cyphophoenix nucele & 2g Cyphophoenix elegans. Can they tolerate summer sun in S FL at this size or do they need shade? Meg - I would say semi-shade. That is where mine are. Not to keep them from our harsh sun, but to keep them cooler. I have not seen a nursery down here yet grow these in full sun, always in a shade house. Best regards, Ron. PalmatierMeg
Those two are long gone. But I have one more of each in the ground in my back yard. I got them a bit larger from a Palm Beach sale last fall(?). Hope they make it through a FL summer. I can't quite remember but it's distinctly possible. I lose palms in pots every summer - usually to rot. I don't cover any of my potted palms during rainy season so they are at the mercy of nature. Just in the past few days I've gotten over 5" of rain with no stop in sight. I hope these current Cyphophoenix will do better because I put them in the ground soon after buying them. They also have the canal and jungle to break the heat. I find our jungle must be 10-15 degrees cooler than the ambient temp. That's the saving grace for my 3 Howeas. 4 Meg Palms of Victory I shall wear Cape Coral (It's Just Paradise) Florida Zone 10A on the Isabelle Canal Elevation: 15 feetI'd like to be under the sea in an octopus' garden in the shade. NatureGirl
My C. nucele gets partial shade. This one was planted from a 3gal the summer 'after' the 2010 freeze. I love it because it does so well here on the beach and doesn't 'brown tip' from all the salt. Never had a problem with summer heat. 2 4 Warrior Palm Princess, Satellite Beach, Florida

NatureGirl
No, I didn't amend the soil, I quit doing that yrs ago for my palms, it wasn't effective. Fertilizer is better. I only amend soil when I plant my bromeliads. Since they have hardly any roots I dig a small hole and put some peat/perlite, they like it better than the sand and it holds the moisture. 2 Warrior Palm Princess, Satellite Beach, Florida
PalmatierMeg
That is a gorgeous palm, Charlene. My C. nucele is planted at the eastern edge of my jungle where it gets morning sun. The C. elegans is planted behind the Carpoxylon right next to the walk. It receives dappled midday sun. Looks like quite a bit of sun in the picture. More light info please... I have a 7 gallon ready to be planted out but want to do it right the first time. Thanks. Mandrew968
In South Florida, nucele is easy and when grown right, looks like a miniature oliviformis in all its parts(might have a slightly more white crownshaft than an olli). Elegans is the harder one to grow. I have just planted my second attempt at elegans. This time, bigger and in a wetter, more rich spot. Bright light for it. I think I will have success.

Central Floridave
I have been growing both for a few years now. (South M.I.) Cyphophoenix elegans is super slow grower & nucele is slow but about 5 times as fast. All in shade. Merlyn
I was thinking of trying Elegans and/or Nucele, any updates on these in the Central Florida area? They both seem fairly hardy, with reports of some damage in the mid-to-upper 20s.

They both seem fairly hardy, with reports of some damage in the mid-to-upper 20s. I had a nice 3 gal size in the ground for a few months but it died. Most likely from too much sun and maybe too much water in the crown during Ian. I had leaf burn on the old leaves but the 2nd round fronds stayed nice and green. The sun and storm must have weakened it though. Ants and aphids were relentless for a while and finally a fungus set in. I treated it but the spear eventually let go. I’m looking for a replacement though! 1
