Well, we're getting rain again, like we have all day, an alfresco car wash, the Green Monster is the shiniest she's been in a couple of weeks.

So far, about half an inch, I'm a bit disappointed . . . .

How about the rest of you?

Oh, and nothing personal to you in Spain! Hole!

Last night's storm stalled over Los Angeles\ Orange counties w/ embedded thundershowers that dropped heavy amounts of rainfall in a relatively short period of time. Resulting mudslides near burn areas were swift & caused severe damage to some homes.

Yeah, big puddles of water in the yard here, Bill. The french gutters are full of sand still( i have'nt had a chance to clean them out)the roof has a leak and my newly laid compost is depleted. But allsgood, bought more today and will lay it out before the next down pour. Wow. Last nights deluge stopped at exactly 12 hours: 5pm to 5am. I know our state needed it.

I looked at my rain bucket this morning and found about 3 inches (7.5 cm) of rain water from the storm. Yeah, screamed a few happy obscenities . . . . . and ran around the block . . . .

Dave and anyone still using their trusty rain-bucket or rain-wheelbarrow, please go out to the .99 cent store and buy a rain gauge. By the way, I must have had 8" of rain at my place this weekend because my dog's bowl was overflowing.

The rain gauges should be filling up in less than 48 hrs though probably not as torrential as last weekend. An unusually cold system is spinning south out of the Gulf of Alaska. The storm track may be a bit more over land than ocean so rain rates shouldn't be too high. But the temperature will be very cold w/ snow levels as low as 2000' [lowest elevation for snow this winter]. Any clearing during this storm could trigger thunderstorms w/ hail :( Frost could easily follow.

The current low seems to be tracking right along the Calif. shore line. We got very little rain from it in N. Calif. and the temps are still mild. Looks like S. Calif will get the bulk of the rain. No frost here in all of Jan and Feb so far. It's been cool, but moderate. I can live with that.

Dick,

Beware that frost is lurking nearby! This storm is as cold as any we have had this winter & overnight clearing could result in frost through-out California for the next few days. Sunny & warmer late in the week.

I recorded 42F\ 5.5C this morning under mostly clear conditions. Strangely, NWS [LA\ SD & even San Francisco] are predicting nothing lower than the 40's for the next few mornings. Even with high pressure building in it seems that clear\ calm nights will produce frost in at least the inland valleys of the Bay Area & SoCal

Took this photo of San Gabriel mts this morning. Snow level is at least 3000'

There was a definite warming of the airmass today; surprisingly quick so maybe NWS is on the money for keeping minimums above 40F across the board [with usual exceptions: Temecula - 37F\ 4.4C]. None-the-less, tonight will be the coldest in many weeks.

Looks like most of our winter rain is being diverted to the US west coast and then moving east across the country. The result being most of Hawaii is drier than normal and some places in a state of drought, which seems to be quite typical during an El Nino weather pattern year. I've resorted to even start watering some of my plants in the ground - especially those that aren't known for any drought tolerance.

Hawaii Island (Big Island), leeward coast, 19 degrees N. latitude, south Kona mauka at approx. 380m (1,250 ft.) and about 1.6 km (1-mile) upslope from ocean.

No record of a hurricane passing over this island (yet!).

Summer maximum rainfall - variable averaging 900-1150mm (35-45") - Perfect drainage on black volcanic rocky soil.

Nice sunsets!

You must be on the wrong side of the island.....it wasn't so long ago that Bo was talking of all of the rain in his area.......maybe a pipeline to Western Hawaii is in order!

While I like the side of the island we're on, it means some watering is required at times as we don't get the rainfall that East Hawaii gets. However, even they (Hilo - east side) are presently wishing for rain as most all of Hawaii is currently experiencing little or no rain (blame it on El Nino). In one of the previous El Nino weather pattern years, I recall even the Hilo side had a serious period of no rain. Even places like S.E. Asia that are normally wet tropical forest climates have had serious El Nino droughts with resulting forest fires raging causing big problems. Remember when the news was reporting about that in Malaysia & Indonesia (Borneo especially)? Few areas on this planet escape these unusual periods of drought or deluge.
