Gizella Kopsick Palm Arboretum

Today I went to Gizella Kopsick Palm Arboretum, and made sure to take lots of pics!

First stop, Jamaican tall coconuts!

DSC01642.jpg

Apparently these came from nuts off of trees at Paul Drummonds house. They have stood the test of time and have managed to not get LY so far.

Scrounging around I was able to find some old pictures of these. I was told the first was in 1993, the second one was 2006, the third one was 2008, and the forth was today.

I manages to knock 2 down, and a third one fell while I was conversing with a man collecting seeds from a nearby fruiting sabal mauritiiformis.

These are my favorite trees in the world. I wish LY hadn't have wiped so many out, these are hands down 1,000 times better than Malayan

Dug out of the ground. This was very rich soil! It must be heavily composted. Also When I was digging these up, there were 2 intoxicated (I believe on both Marijuana and alcohol) garbling to each other on the bench next to me about acquiring and smoking marijuana, how they didn't know where they were, and some stuff I couldn't understand. Some people really take advantage of something as WONDERFUL as having this AMAZING park free of admission, tisk tisk...

This one seems to have the best chance of Germination. There is no green left on it anymore and it the one that fell naturally while I was there. They all have water in them though, so they all might germinate.

DSC01746.jpg

I'm going to soak these for 3 days, changing the water daily. They all float, which is a good sign!

DSC01747.jpg

This is where they will be for the next 3 days in water, I think I'll germinate them there too.

DSC01748.jpg

Safely tucked away above the drier, that light is always on (it's fluorescent, and hard to reach, so no one ever turns it off...) and it's above the drier and in the garage, so it gets more heat than ambient temperature outside. I think they will have the best bet germinating there.

That's all folks! Hope you enjoyed!

Excellent photos Keith. I used to go to Kopsick all the time to photograph palms, I love that place! The Jamaican Tall coconuts look great! Good luck germinating them.

Thanks! I plan to go at least once a month to check on those Jamaican tall coconuts, especially now I know I can knock ripe ones down with a baseball!

Keith, nice photos. This is a cool park I have never visted. Next time I'm up that way I now know that this little hot spot is a must see. BTW, Pic 3 of post 5 is Syagrus botryophora. Oh, and that Sabal lisa is freakin cool! I can't wait to get one of those as it is one of the only Sabals I really love also. Thanks for sharing.

I think his name's Phil. I'd like to know if it IS or ISN'T one.

If it's not a B. alfredii, it's a darn coconut! :floor:

Ray, I was honestly thinking about climbing the coconuts, I've done it before (shorter trees though), but my mom didn't want me falling into the concrete, so the baseball worked just as well. When I saw those Royals I thought about your posts on the Haley house, but I wasn't sure whether or not it was. As to the B. alfredii, I'd like to see if anyone can chime in with if it is or not.

PiousPalms, I really like this park as well, now I have my new baseball method of getting coconuts down I think I'll try to go once a month or so

pohonkelapa, Thanks for the Id's, I thought the same thing about the Beccariophoenix. It says on the bottom that it's the windows form, so I wonder why it wasn't called the window palm, or something of the like. As to the location of the park, it is in St. Petersburg Fl, close to the St. Pete pier. It's north of me, so it gives me a pretty good idea of what will grow here and what won't.
